TOPIC: Bye SCOS

The Hawks were never slow and I don't see how B Hill was targeted in the draft at pick 33 but he had value at the Hawks in the role he played. I don't think we have the same role at Freo for him and I believe there are better players for it (S Hill, Bennell, D Pearce, Weller, Langdon etc) a long with better options in the upcoming draft at pick 23 (or 7 if SPS manages to sneak through).
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

You are in the minority again Biz, if you think Pearce is better suited than B Hill to the delivering of the ball into our forwards. I don't see how SPP comes into the equation. At pick 7, trading 23 for Hill has not affected the pick, and if he doesn't slide to 7 we have Hill. Although I don't see them competing for the same spot.

I refer to SPS as someone who is better equipped for the role than B Hill.

You also referred to S Hill, Bennell, D Pearce, Weller, and Langdon as better suited, Pearce, is highly critisised here, and his kicking is nowhere near the class of Hills' and Weller and Langdon while promising have like SPS yet to prove themselves in the cauldron of finals footy. Hill has.

Brad Hill was taken late by the Hawks and they could not believe he was still available at 33. It was at a time when a number of young Indigenous players had been picked up by Vic clubs, had shown early promise but for a number of reasons not gone further and ended up going home. For this reason a lot of young Indigenous players were overlooked as high draft picks.
Brad was never a fringe player at the Hawks he played in 4 GFs and 5 finals series ending up with 3 premiership medals. There are a stack of players who were at the team in that period who played games in those seasons and only have one or no medals - see Matt Sphanger. Fringe players may fluke a GF medal but guys with 3 don't.

For my two cents worth if i had pick 23 in the draft and i had a crystal ball that said you are only going to get 7 years or so out of this guy but he can play at this level , And they showed me his last 4 , I would say beam me up scotty

I do Raglan and I believe they are or will be soon. D Pearce does the same job in a worse team and can find his own footy. I'm pretty sure I did a comparison involving the 2 Hill's and Pearce a month ago that showed how much more of the footy Danyle got while disposing of it at the same efficiency (from tougher contested positions I'd add).

Weller and Langdon have been groomed for the roll too and should be ready to step up having shown a bit on the outside. Otherwise trade them out if we aren't giving them a game.

Then there's S Hill and Bennell who are a few classes above.

Hill was actually their first pick in the 2011 draft, they took Smith as their first pick in the 2010 draft, so it suggests that they were targeting pace at that time (Hawthorn were never slow…hilarious).

You’d also be comfortable with the inference that a bloke who missed the first four weeks of the season yet still came straight into the side, along with the fact that he hasn’t played in the VFL since 2012, might be considered by the coaching panel as someone pretty important to their set-up.

Brad Hill has elite endurance and pace which means that he can run all day, so when we get to a last quarter and every one is completely spent he still has the ability to break the line and open the game up. If you talk to player that have tried to run with Hill they will tell you he never stops and once they start fading they cannot keep up. This then give other player more space within the game. Hill is not an accumulator of the footy he is there to create space and options for our gun midfield to do the damage.

So we have gone from saying they are better than B Hill to "they should be soon".

We don't take Hill this year, but next October when Weller and Langdon haven't stepped up we trade them for B Hill. Seems like Bond & Co thought that it might be better to have B Hill doing the job now, and give the other 2 time too develop their game. That works for me, by the way I see Langdon as a replacement across the backline, much in the mould of Ibbo in his good years and Crozier.

I never said B Hill wasn't in the Hawks best 22 or going to be picked in it whenever fit. I don't think he is integral to it though and they beat decent sides without him in those first 4 rounds including the Dogs and OOFtIT's. He never finished anywhere near the top of the best and fairest at the Hawks either which is a pretty good indication of how they rated him amongst the side. He's not a bad player but he is very 1 dimensional which makes him very hard to carry if things aren't going his way.

I was speaking in the collective RM, I reckon Weller is better than B Hill at present with many more strings to his bow while Langdon has shown plenty so far to suggest he can do the outside job and also get the footy himself but has some improvement to do. I can't see the much smaller Langdon fairing well in any sort of comparison to the good aerial work of Ibbo and Crozier that has made them so good defensively. If Langdon were to become a small defender he'd be a very different player to those two, more likely a running quarter back type who gets handball receives and tries to run and carry.

They also won those games without Roughead too, but I don't think that says much about his importance to them. I don't think best and fairest results are anywhere near as reliable an indication of how important a player is to a side, vs how they’re treated at the selection table. It's not as though the Hawks lacked depth.

Perhaps we could agree that what Brad Hill was able to bring was viewed as important to their structure by Clarkson et al and that there's a fair amount of evidence there to suggest that he can more than hold his own in a (triple) premiership side?

It is Ibbo and Croziers work to get the ball downfield I was referring to Biz, Ibbo was doing that when we had Luke, Johnno and Zac doing the aerial work, and that was when he was at his best. Most of his marks then were uncontested intercepts and came from reading the play well, a talent I see in Crozier and Langdon.

As for B Hill, he has been recruited precisely for the skills he showed at Hawthorn, skills we do not have in our side at the moment despite your thoughts on Weller and D Pearce. D Pearce is more a Suban, Mzungu or De Boer type of kick, get it forward at all costs, not lace out to the forwards like B Hill. Weller may develop to the stage where he is at Hill's level, which will be good coz we will have 2 elite delivers of the footy in our midfield.

IMO:

What should have been, 2017:

Backs: Silvagni, Hambling, Spurr
HB: Johnson; Pearce, A; Crozier
Mid: Hill, S; Mundy; Hill, B
HF: Walters, Fyfe, McCarthy
FF: Taberner, Kersten; Yarran
Ruck: Sandilands; Barlow; Neale

I/C Clarke; Bennell; Sutcliffe, Sheridan

Apologies; Ballantyne; Pearce, D; Weller; Ibbo

Touch tall in the backs but I like the ability of Silvagni and Johnson to pick up smaller opponents

With the recent delistings:

Backs: Sutcliffe, Hambling, Spurr
HB: Johnson; Pearce, A; Crozier
Mid: Hill, S; Mundy; Hill, B
HF: Walters, Taberner , McCarthy
FF: Ballantyne , Kersten; Yarran
Ruck: Sandilands; Fyfe ; Neale

I/C Clarke; Bennell; Pearce, D, Sheridan

Apologies; Blakely; Weller; Ibbo; Tucker

And I don't like that side as much
