TOPIC: Bye SCOS

I seriously doubt that any Freo fan wanted to see Barlow or SCOS delisted.
But it's a bit early to confidently say the new players won't make the team any better - they deserve a chance, and they are not the ones doing the recruiting. I say get behind them, and hopefully they'll bring home the bacon.
Barlow is one of my favourite players ever, but I have a strong feeling that the younger players given the opportunity last season (Weller, Tucker, Langdon, Blakely especially) will be big improvers over the next year or two. I sense that elusive flag is closer than you think, Biz.

Biz the reality is draftees generally take 3,4 or 5 years before playing consistent strong footy not two

Totally agree. Barlow is right up there as one of my favourite Dockers ever, Mayne too for that matter, and I really hope they both do sensationally at the Pies and wherever Mickey ends up. Such incredibly nice young men, so unlike Masten-ey it isn't funny.
But the exciting thing about those four young ones you mention, and Yarran, Pearce, Hughes, is that they all look natural footy players, knowing where to run to, how to get the pill and importantly how to finish. I for one am very excited by these boys having another preseason and extra weights prior to 2017.
I know Langdon has only signed on for a year, and I certainly hope the boy stays - playing the 200 alongside his housemates in Blakely and Weller - because I suspect he could be the best of the lot. Basic and Bennell, who knows, but if fit they could carve it up as well.
Suban really can count himself lucky I reckon, and he needs to blitz 2017 or he will end up playing for the Roos.

Balic is the player being groomed to take over from Mick in the middle - coming back and showing some talent in the latter part of the year at North Bunbury sealed the deal.

Spot on Polly, you have to remember folks Ballic and Tucker should never have been available for our list, but the planets aligned and we had them fall into our laps.

Edit: Jarrod Berry is similar to these guys in that last year he was being touted as a top three player, but injury this year has seen him slip in calculations to just inside the top ten to as far as pick 15 or 16. That kid is now fully recovered and would be an excellent replacement for D Mundy when he hands up his boots. I hope we get him with our pick 7.

Just naming a pool of candidates is a bit vague and doesn’t really have the same specificity for what you did for the in-traded players Bizkit. A fairer method for your argument would have you doing a similar match-up process with each of those players you’d keep til 2019 and the potential draft pick at the selections we had at the start of the trade period. For example:

Pavlich: Pick 3 – Sam Petrevski-Seton
Barlow: Pick 43 – Pepper-Powell
Mayne: Pick 61 – Bolton
Silvagni: Pick 79 – Logue

They may make the team better Yoss but I may also be about to win the lotto tomorrow. When looking at the abilities of what we've lost and what we've replaced it with, up the ladder is not the direction most likely. The upwards move comes from the kids we already have as you mention, not the 23yo's replacing already decent players and that's why I would have kept our picks (for better talent than the 23yo's) and our mid tier players (to hold the fort and teach the draftees over the next couple of years).

Draftees can have immediate impacts and be playing good solid footy very early, especially if they are top 20 picks. If they are taking 5yrs to contribute then odds are they are a ruckman or not very good.

ROTV I gave you a list of potential players available at 23 as you asked which is very specific when we have no idea who will be available and who Freo's recruiters rate. I don't understand how your comparisons work at evaluating the players we traded in when you are using players we got rid of that have nothing to do with the draftees or those picks. Giving up pick 23 for B Hill is the specific example I've used so B Hill is the player that pick will be compared to. That means B Hill needs to be better for us than those players I listed who we would have grabbed instead of B Hill. I don't see the flaw you do in my methods or argument there.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

C'mon, where did it even look like I asked you who you would pick at 23?

It started with you making a like for like comparison with the traded in guys (all of whom have attributes we could use more of which are rarer in the early stages of this year's draft) with Pav, Mayne, Barlow & Silvagni. I then asked how that comparison would fare 2018 & beyond and you said something to the effect that you were hoping for the high picks we'd forgone to push them out in 2018/19. I then wanted to know who exactly were these players we could have taken with the picks we had prior to the trade period (in the first asking I just thought it would follow from your post, but in the second asking I got a bit more explicit).

I actually took pick 23 out of the equation as Mayne seemingly was included in your assets we should've kept pile.

Maybe there was some miscommunication about. I wasn't saying those players should all be kept, I said they are missing from our 2016 side that managed 4 wins. Keeping Pav and Mayne was never something I suggested, just the comparison between 2016's best 22 and those we traded in who are supposed to be carrying us into premiership contention. My personal opinion is that the 4 we lost are much better than the 4 we gained in the trade period which would indicate we aren't going to improve on that front.

What I was explaining is the blokes we've brought in over the trade period a part from McCarthy are not potential stars based on where they are as players after 6 seasons and are unlikely to be a mainstay of a premiership side unlike those we could have had if we held our draft picks. I view them as filler who can play a role but have weaknesses that will stop them being elite players and Barlow and SCOS could do just as good a job in the next few years until the picks we gave away had developed into better replacements.

Pick 23 was the main pick I was referring to with those draftees I named as they are likely to be late first round/early second round.

You do realise of course that the player we got from pick 23 actually was a mainstay of a triple premiership side (and one of the others acquitted himself very well across a whole finals series, including the GF). Look I have a lot of sympathy for the benefits of keeping Barlow, DeBoer and Silvagni, but the latter two, however unfairly, weren't even mainstays of a non-premiership side and I'm not sure that was going to change. Also this draft just doesn't have a lot of KPP talent available, so it's a year further to wait on the development of any top line KPP draftees anyways.

I would debate the assertion B Hill was a mainstay of the side although he was in their starting 22. I think the tactics employed by the Hawks and the quality of their midfield allowed them to play a purely outside midfielder who was also behind others in the 22 like Smith as a luxury outside mid.

It'll be a very different game plan and style of play and I think we have that position well covered, especially if we drafted as I hope. He isn't in my best 22 although I realise I'm in the minority there.

It wasn't a luxury for the Hawks, it was a cornerstone, they actively went out and recruited him to address something that would take them further into contention mode. He was good enough at it to allow their slow midfield to be used at its utmost potential.

I don't understand why some players on our team earn reputations for being the reason the team is doing badly. As an attempt to understand I looked at three players who are in the spotlight this season for different reasons. S Hill - much loved fan favorite, D Pearce - much maligned escaped goat and B Hill - much debated pick up by Freo in the trade period.
I have used from 2016 goals, tackles, disposals and marks as the four areas of comparison for no reason other than I think they are important for a mid field player.
The results are interesting:
S Hill - G 4, T 81, D 522, M 63
D Pearce - G 4, T 57, D 479, M 83
B Hill - G 11, T 51, D 348, M 61
These results alone show that S Hill would appear to be better than the other two at getting the ball close in. But it is only in the last three seasons when S Hill has been used in a more defensive role, that he has accumulated above 300 plus disposals a season. D Pearce has had above 400 plus disposals in every season he has played bar 2 (his rookie year and one year at Port 300 plus). B Hill like his older brother at the same age currently averages 300 plus disposals a season. One thing all three plyers have in common is they are durable, they have not missed a lot of games through injury.
In our GF year S Hill kicked 12 goals, D Pearce kicked 10 and B Hill kicked 18. I think having all three players at Freo is a good thing. Having the Hills in the centre, Crozier and D Peace in the backline and Walters, Yarran and Bennell drifting forward gives us something we have not had for a long time, skill and pace to burn on every line.

I know this is a thread about SCOS, but I think Hill bros, D. Pearce and Crozier are complementary players and can all fit in the side.

Hill bros to the wings, Crozier to HBF and Pearce starting on the bench. They could all potentially rotate or preferably Pearce cover for one of the other three when they rest. I like it.
