TOPIC: O'Meara Trade

If it's such a "non event" as Morgan and Gilligan are trying to convince us, why didn't the Hawks send the GWS second round pick on and retain their own second round pick? Clearly the recipient thought the Hawks one was more valuable?

Thus the "net position of the clubs pick" does not equate to keeping one of their first or second round picks.

I don't think the AFL should be in the business of assessing the worth of a future second round pick based on where it thinks clubs will finish. That's highly speculative and should be left to the clubs. The AFL certainly shouldn't be basing rules on that speculation.

Hawks have a second round pick. That should be enough.

I agree with you Morgan that it is not a massive difference and is the correct decision based on the intent around the draft, but I find the AFL has a few to many of these deviations from what is written when it suits them.
I make the point again about the extension of the draft period. How long is it extended next year and for what clubs?
I am not fully across all of the rules for the different academies but there sounds like there are some looser interpretations on what constitutes development when it suits also.

What I see in this Morgan is the probability of the AwFL using the loopholes you claim are common sense application of the rule to do the same in reverse to punish a club like Freo in the same situation.

Either the rules too complicated/ambiguous, in which case the AFL again show that they are a bunch of numties, or no one from the AFL, Hawks and Suns saw the error until it was too late, which seems highly suspicious (easier to seek forgiveness than approval). Either way, if the trade was put in with insufficient time to find this error, then it should be made null and void. If not, we now have a precedent where we can wait until 1.59.59 (EDST) to submit a dodgy trade, after which we say sorry and move on with our trade ratified.

Semantics or not, each of the various loose interpretations of the rules being suggested all still point towards a requirement that clubs retain a second round pick, one way or another. Hawthorn's first pick in the 2016 draft is pick 88. That doesn't seem right...

They have Carlton's 2017 second round pick.

The AFLPA wanted more player movement. Being able to trade future picks helps in that endeavour. The AFL is concerned that spendthrift GMs will over-spend and mortgage the club's future for short-term gains. So, they put in place restrictions. They communicated those restrictions to the clubs. We haven't seen that communication. The AFL says the Hawks complied. No clubs have complained.

I just don't see the issue. I just see a people complaining #freepickhawthorn with no basis to do so.

A shame the AFL was not so helpful in bending the rules when Freo recruited Fabian Francis

And that they were not so accommodating when Freo wanted to sign that academy player from up North earlier this year. What is your take on their wishes to help players and clubs in that situation? They are VERY selective in their application and enforcement of the rules and the Hawthorn decision is another example of that. A rule is a rule unless it is interpreted by AwFL then it is what they want it to be.

Whether you agree with the rule or not is not the point. If the AwFL wanted more movement of players with less restrictions they would go back to allowing clearances up to 30th June each season.

How do you know if the rules were bent if you haven't seen the rules? Sydney was banned from trading once for no reason. You don't think they would have raised the issue if the Hawks cheated?

Swans have been paid off by COLA and the Buddy/Kurt deals, they don't want people looking too closely at how the AwFL runs the ship.

Don't underestimate the role of whatever...um...lets call it "magic squiggles"...produced the exceedingly generous compensation to Fremantle for Chris Mayne in this O'Meara thing.

The generous compensation reflects Collingwood's generous salary offer to Maybe per the AFL's formula. If Gubby didn't open his chequebook, the AFL wouldn't have given us such a good pick.

We couldn't take the academy kid because we'd had nothing to do with him and his development, he wasn't in any academy of ours despite being in our zone. It's the same as Marshall who many see as the best KPF in the draft being rejected as a GWS academy kid, GWS had little to do with him.

This is a bit of a storm in a tea cup.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.
