TOPIC: Why do we still have Zac?

Its not nastiness ! Its a bit of introspection and pragmatism. You can't announce that you are "going to play like Hawthorn", spend an off season 'improving skills', and then come 3rd last with and absolutely deplorable exhibition of skill and game plan, without some introspection and accountability.

Some of that has been occurring in the past couple of weeks.... Has it been targeted correctly??

If we keep watching the goings on at Freo through purple tinted glasses, nothing will change and we'll spend another 21 years riding the roller coaster. Surely 21 years of 'interesting times' has taught us that we've got to have blokes who can kick, not ones that are instructed not to.

And so, the question remains - from one of Freo's most passionate and fervent supporters...(just like you all) - why is "The Fist" still there??? I appreciate hes extracted all from his ability, I appreciate he does a job, I appreciate hes a battler....but go and have a look at a replay of the GF. You need foot skills, and you need 18 blokes on the ground, running through. If they can't do that, they shouldn't be there. That should be the 'line in the sand' that we draw before 2017 begins!

If the Mighty #3 is on the field its 17 vs 18 before we even start .... We are a long way away form 2013, and we not suddenly going to have a backline that protects ZD.

Fair call - Kennedy had 6 goals to 3QT.

Alex Silvagni did an excellent job on Jack Darling in defence and was required to roll over to Kennedy in the last quarter.

Judging Dawson on his disposal is like judging Sandilands on his forward pressure or Neale on his pack marking. For a hundred years there has been a place on the team for tall guys at one end to kick the ball high too, and tall guys from the other team trying to stop them marking. Dawson is pretty good at that role. He's also good at some other things, like shepherding, zoning off his player and looking awkward enough that frees that could be paid against him sometimes aren't. He's a team man through-and-through, never throws his teammates under the bus by blaming them for a his guy getting open, and will leave his bloke to cover for other guys. He knows his limitations and rarely attempts things he can't do. He practically never has had bags kicked on him at Freo.

He is a consistent, known quantity. An established backline will intuitively work together to use each other’s strengths and cover weaknesses. They'll know what ZeD is doing, and know not to give him in the ball. For years we had an established backline that was among the best in the league. The others thrived, in part, because ZeD let them play their own game (Luke being on the speedier players, Johnno being able to play the intercept role).

We no longer have an established backline, and the star players from it are gone. No-one in the backline can kick, but ZeD is the worst of the lot. In the same way that Chris Mayne would be a good player in a team for of goal scorers, ZeD would still be a good player in a team with a backline full of blokes capable of kicking a football. We just aren't that team.

He is now probably fourth in a pecking order that includes an All-Australian who missed all of last season (Johnno) a bloke who was a back-up at Footscray (Hamling), a talented quick tall bloke who keeps getting injured (A Pearce) and a young tall slow bloke who was regularly towelled up last season. Given he has a contract, and is a strong chance of actually playing games, I can’t see any reason to get rid of him.

He’s played more than half his career for Freo - he is a Freo player. Disagreement on his value is to be expected - after all legends of the club like Parker and McManus would also cop it because they were no good with ball in hand, so an average player is sure to cop it – but gleefully hoping for him to be sacked is a pretty ungracious way to treat a player who has been a good servant of the club.

He's also good at giving away 50m penalties and free kicks in front of goal, but I guess you can't have everything.

Geez Davo, this is why people have a problem with Zac! That game against Weagles where Kennedy had a swag of goals by three qtr time was one that Zac didn't even play in. Sam Collins was up against Kennedy and if you need a game as a reference point to how good Zac can be then have a look at the Geelong game in round 17 opposed to Hawkins where he owned the big Tomcat. I'm with Wabbit on this one, whack him when he deserves it, but otherwise give him a bit of support. He bleeds purple, he's one of us and gives everything in each game he plays.

Yes he gives his all but unfortunately that ain't much and agree his man never gets many goals but he does have a habit of punching it down in front of someone else's man quite often resulting in a goal. Having said that I like him as a person having met him but think our new young guys need someone with a bit of grunt around them (alas now no Silvagni) just hope Johnno can keep fit.

But that's the point, he punches the ball away from his man and stops him scoring. That's his job and if it goes to another opposition player then it is the job of that player's opponent to stop him scoring. It's all about working as a team and being responsible for stopping YOUR opponent from scoring. The problem in our defence this season, 2016, is that our defenders were frequently not accountable for THEIR man. That is why Rosco likes Zac, because he is accountable for his man and stopping him from scoring. Our biggest problem this season is that we had lost probably the best full back in the competition, Luke McPharlin who made all those teammates look better than they really are. It's no coincidence that guys like Sutcliffe, Ibbotson, Spurr and even Johnno have struggled in his absence. They have been forced to work harder and become more accountable and it's easy to see why guys like Alex Pearce, Collins and Crozier are becoming regular defenders as they exhibit an improved work rate. Zac is not perfect but it is definitely not his fault alone that our defence didn't work efficiently this season.

As I said before, we go better when he is playing than we do when he isn't, so why not keep him out there?.

Luke Mac was the general of our back line, ever reliable, skilled and incredibly tough and the glue that held it together.

Dawson the role player, took his man and stopped him from scoring by hook or by crook

Johnson is an intelligent footballer, good decision maker and very skilled.

Duffield the playmaker, fast and skilled.

Those four have been (in my view) the steady cogs of the Freo defense in recent years and what a well oiled machine it was. ONE of them now remains. You take that many cogs out of any one machine and it will implode...much like Fremantle's 2016 campaign. Its just chemistry...or engineering...or whatever. It doesn't mean that the one remaining is a bad cog...it just can't handle the workload all on its own.

Morgan, i hadn't realised that ZacD's multiple deficiencies allowed Elvis to be speedy and First Johnno to be the general. the way i saw it was they didn't have a choice, because he wasn't going to do it and couldn't do it.

No, they played their roles as Zac played his. It's a team game and even the Hawthorn team that won three in a row had specific roles for their players, Lake, Frawley, Gibson etc to play. They too had their limitations but a team defence allows each player to do his specific role which then constitutes the well oiled machine that was ours in 2013 & 2015. It's now up to Rosco to find players to fill the roles. I don't necessarily think that the defence lineup named in our "best 22'' on AFL site will be the one lining up in 2017. Crozier for a start has filled the rebounding half back role very well in the latter half of of 2016 and I'm not sure what Sheridan's role will be, possible run with player in midfield, a spot he filled well towards the end of the season.
