TOPIC: Why do we still have Zac?

cletus Why do we still have Zac? 7 years 6 months ago #1

Ok...we are going in a different direction, and yes, time waits for no one, andso great servants like Matty de Boer, Clancy, Tendai, and Mickey B must go...

But the question has to be asked - why are we keeping a bloke that can't kick, can't mark, can't provide a body-on-body contest with a 'big forward', can't run-off or run past ( ..or rather WON'T!..), and definitely, has no upside??

I very much appreciate his unique attributes. His ability to execute 1m handballs to a teammate under pressure; His great ability to punch an uncontested markable ball; and, His ability to walk back to his player after pretending to provide a contest, has no equal.

But surely, in this era of 'different direction', Zac has 23 rounds of bench warming in front of him - or 23 games for Peel.

Are there any 'Zachary- philes' out there that can explain....???!! - Or are there a few of you that agree???

He still have one more year (I think?) left on his contract, and somewhat surprisingly, didn't attract much attention on the trade table...

He's a KPP.

He's tall.

He does a reasonable shut down job on the bigger forwards going around.

Problem for me is footy is now more than ever a (retain) possession / invasion game where you attempt to move ball down field without opposition touching it (or at worst ensuring if ball is in dispute opp don't take clean possession)

When Zac plays we effectively try and do this 17 v 18 because he plays no part in this process. He doesn't even run to create space and make an opp player go with him.

This is why, despite shutdown roles he does, it is time for him to go (or if we have to make most of his final year only play when other blokes injured or opposition has a clear match-up for him)

For the same reason he was always selected before SCOS, he's Roly's love child.

We are a worse team because of it.

Well said 391!!! Its the 17 vs 18 thingo that really bugs me, given that Rossy's game plan revolves around 18 vs 18 ! ZD 's contribution has to be more than just shutting someone down. And enough of throwing Silvagni to the wolves everytime it looks like Zac's going to get manhandled. Next thing we'll see is Silver getting delisted and that will make me really grumpy!!. Hands up all those who'd like to see Silver playing and having a REAL go, rather than ZD doing what he does.....

I honestly think it's time we gave ZD and DP for that matter, a bit of a rest.

Past is past and we know, as I'm sure they also know, that 2016 was below average.

With some new blood and rejuvenated leadership, I'm hoping they both have a new fresh attitude and hunger.

I'm a Fister until otherwise proven foolish in 2017!

I'm with you W33. The whipping boy says more about the whippers than the boy. Whatever deficiencies Zac has, he was a functional part of an incredibly good back line while McPharlap was around, a back line with options that didn't trapped in many scenarios that ended with a one meter handball. The problem was imagining ZacD would be able to replace Luke. The guy is a stick.

Hopefully we might have a Luke-a-like now. Well, near Luke-a-like. Interesting times.

Well...I'll accept he was 'present' in a good backline. But he wasn't doing much, and nothing much has changed. Surely, I line is drwn in the sand after last year, and we move forward. 'The Fist' has no place going forwards, so why are we bothering??... And Gawd help if if he's there to be an example to the young 'uns...
Whipper I may be, but its time to move him on....

The reality is, he can fulfill a role and KPP's are more a scarcer commodity on our list, so it makes some sense to keep him on the list. Certainly until we see how Hamling goes, but he's a bit taller than Silvagni and Hamling too, so even though he might not offer as much in terms of weapons he can go with the reach of more of the bigger key forwards. Good news for the anti-Dawson Front is you'd think he's going to be massively under the pump this year.

Harking back to whether teams are defined by their weakest or strongest players, I recall a stat that said the best teams were the ones that shared the ball around the most. Now I'm picturing Lee Spur, under enormous pressure having the choice of handballing to Zac D or, say, Jack Darling. I reckon he'd give it to Darling and hope he messed it up before he'd give it to ZD. Its the percentage thing to do. Yes, its lovely that ZD beats his opponent, but SCOS can do that too, and SCOS can be part of a series of handballs under pressure.

Although, the question was why is Dawson on the list at all. Not is he a better option than Silvagni.
