There's been a lot of talk on this forum about the effects, if any, of travel on the WA teams and their players. Certainly clubs seem to have concerns about 6 day breaks, and you wouldn't think that travel would help in that regard. One way to mitigate that disadvantage would be to have the WA teams play early in the first round. By playing Freo on Sunday, you actually increase the number of 6 day breaks in the first half of the season.

But no, we get four Melbourne teams lead off the season.

I reckon Rd1 against the Cats is an easy game. Cast your minds back to Rd1 2012, Roly's first game as Freo's coach, playing against the reigning premiers in Geelong. Fair to say, a memorable day. This time a re-wire, re-stumped Freo side against a preliminary finalist of 2016. I'm excited.
