I would love us to get Zac Fisher if he's still there at pick 35 or 40, he's a speedy little ball magnet that always seems to get a hand pass out if he gets caught.

I should place a disclaimer here, most of my knowledge comes from watching the U18 champs (this year and last) and the all star game on TV with some live games colts/league WAFL fixtures thrown in along with reading a lot of opinion pieces and descriptions of draft prospects around the place. It's tough to get a decent read of what players are doing off the ball without being at the game but for the most part draft talent is judged by what they do with it and the clubs are expecting to train/teach the rest once they are drafted.

There are two ways of doing this, how I expect clubs to draft and how I rate each talent in the draft. With academy picks the first option will blow our pick out a little but I think it's the more relevant list so that's the one I'd go with.

I) Essendon - Hugh McLuggage
II) GWS - Andrew McGrath
III) GC - Jack Bowes - matching an early bid by Brisbane for their academy product with the points from pick 4
IV) Brisbane - Sam Petrevski-Seton
V) GWS - Will Setterfield - matching an early bid by Carlton for their academy product
VI) Carlton - Will Brodie
VI) GC - Ben Ainsworth/Tim Taranto - Could go either way depending on what they see as their weakness. Ainsworth has more pace and is more of a small forward but has spent time in the middle and will probably end up there similar to a Brent Harvey where as Taranto is more of a mid that pushes forward. GC will be happy with either and have the pick after us at #8 so a good chance to get both
VII) Fremantle - Ainsworth/Taranto - I'd like to take which ever of these two GC don't but we may also bid on Harry Perryman who is a GWS academy prospect and would be matched by them. Logue is also an option here but I think it would be reaching a bit. I really hope we don't get English at this pick.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Are you sure GWS have pick 5? AFL site as of yesterday says they have 2 and 15.

Those concessions are the gift that keeps on giving. They've offloaded previous high draft players in trades for picks, which still allows them to top up with cream.

Its how the bidding system will work in that scenario if Carlton bid for that GWS academy player (Setterfield) with their pick 5 and GWS match it with points, GWS get that player at 5 and Carlton get the next pick at 6.

The order gets pushed down. Earlier in Bizkit's predicted scenario, when a Gold Coast academy player is bid on at 3, I would think Gold Coast would also have the option of matching it with points from their many later picks and then pick again at 5 (which would have been 4). ie. Rather than just use the points from pick 4 to match pick 3.

Ainsworth and Taranto are both excellent choices but I would add to that list in this order :
First round pick Jarrod Berry - Midfielder/half back 191cm 80kg Vic, Josh Battle 192cm 90kg KPF Vic, Jonty Scharenberg Midfielder 186cm 80kg SA and Jy Simpkin Half forward/Midfileder.181cm 81kg Vic.Any of those guys would be a good get.

1st Second round pick - Zac Fisher - Midfielder 175cm 61kg WA, Sam Pepper Powell - 186cm 83kg, Midfielder/Half forward WA, Jamie Hampton 186cm 78kg Half-back SA and Joe Atley 186cm 84kg Midfielder Vic all good second rounders if still available.

2nd Second round pick - Tim English 203cm 86kg Ruckman/Tall forward WA, Max Lynch 200cm 96kg Ruckman Vic, Sam Walker 187cm 80kg Half back SA and Jack Scrimshaw 193cm 80kg Defender/midfielder Vic.
If we can get any of these players at the picks we have we will have done exceptionally well.

So not only do they get to use valuable players as trade and pick commodities, the AFL allow them to run a players farm, for which they still get concession picks if other teams bid for their potential draftees.

GWS have been smart managers too, but how the hell can a new team possibly fail with these free rides?

It is a bit rigged. I was just reading about this prospect Setterfield that's part of the GWS academy. He left Albury to live for two years and advanced his football skills at Caufield Grammar in Melbourne.

I think there's some kind of points used discount when you match bids too.

Sorry if I didn't explain it well but Chewy has done the job. GWS will pick up Setterfield (and GC Bowes) at whatever point he is bid on by another club as both they and GC have an absolute plethora of high picks and 'points' to match any bid on their academy players (the main reason I didn't like what we gave up for McCarthy). It's why I can't see any way SPS falls to us as the only reason he has been rated less than top 3 by anyone is injury related. The Giants and Suns won't let him get to us and Brisbane would love to pick him up too (apparently SPS was a Lions supporter growing up so less go home factor there).

Our pick could drop to as low as 10 depending on how the academy picks are matched but I have it at 7 as that's kind of my ideal scenario. The players listed by BPurple are all good and likely top 20 picks but towards the latter end of the 20 opposed to top 10. That is the problem with giving up our early pick and then 23, we miss our chance at one of the outright elite and of snaffling a top 20 slider, instead looking like getting that top 20 slider or the equivalent only.

I had hoped one of Logue, Powell-Pepper, Bolton, Battle or Florent would fall to 23 and we'd pick up a potential star but I can't see any of them making it near our next pick.

Even if SPS was/is a Lions supporter (he's would have been around 12 when Brissie starting winning flags - quite the impressionable age) you'd think they'd look a bit closer to home based on their inability to retain interstate talent (one could argue, local talent as well with the departure of Hanley).

I could be proved wrong but I'd be surprised if he wasn't still available at our first pick - whenever that is.

They started being competitive when he was born.
They won premierships when he was 3,4 & 5.
They stopped being competitive around the time he would have been keen on footy.

They wont take him IMO as they cant afford any more WA boys heading home

Pretty sure they need to match a bid with points from their next available and cant just use a bunch of 2nd & 3rd round picks, they do get the discount on points value though, on of the reasons GWS were desperate to get pick 2 was so thier first pick wasn't wasted matching a bid for setterfield or Perryman, which the lions or us may have forced them to do.

The Brisbane fan comment was more in reference to our potential of getting him to come back to WA in the future after the Lions draft him. Brisbane have every reason to draft SPS assuming McLuggage is gone and in most mock drafts I've looked at, Brissy supporters have been all for grabbing him.

There's absolutely no reason GC wouldn't take him if he managed to slip through either let alone Carlton who could use some pace to support Cripps.

Don't be so pessimistic Biz, when have the draft selections matched the "phantom drafts" done by those experts in the media?

Could go pretty close to what Biz has.. I would be stoked with Ainsworth if that happens

Does everyone know about the regions coming in....

"The Fremantle Dockers have been given access to the Kimberley region, which is likely to produce a top-10 pick this year in midfielder Sam Petrevski-Seton, who hails from Halls Creek.
Fremantle will not be able to get priority access to Petrevski-Seton this year but would be able to attract talent from that region in future years."

Cedric Cox is also another awesome player this year from the Kimberley.. It might be our football factory
