Can someone tie this all together.
Who did we get and who did we lose?
Which picks did we get and which picks did we lose?

So, in summary, do I have this right?

We lost Mayne, Pick 3 and 34
We gained Cam Mac, BHill, Hamling, Kersten and Pick 7

If that is correct, it's a reasonable effort.

Agree, best trade period effort, well done Freo.

Challenge - name the second best trade period we've had.

Despite my personal view that we have done extremely well this trade period - there are several on here that hold the view we shouldn't be trading in mid-tier players for the (former) mid tier players we have just let go - Gu, Da Pig, Mayne, et al.

The argument being that we made a GF with this mid tier blokes so they should be retained.

My take on it, setting aside the argument as to whether these new recruits are an improvement on those that have left, is we have improved based on the age of the new blokes alone.

It is true that Da Pig and Gu, in particular, bleed purple and have particular traits (I.e. Elite endurance) that fit well with RLs game plan. However, these blokes have peaked and are not getting any younger.

Assuming that RL doesn't revert completely to the 'old' game plan - unlikely with the reduction in rotations - then the new and improved game plan is still going to rely on foot soldiers to execute successfully.

All of these new lads are under 23 and are going to be around for the next 7+ years. As all the other clubs have said in relation to players they've picked up in this age range - they all have their best footy in front of them. The same cannot be said for Pig, Gu, C. Pearce & Mayne.

So regardless of your view about the relative merits of the traded in players, one undeniable fact is they are all younger - significantly younger in the case of Mayne & Gu.

That alone makes this a successful trade period - particularly as we have not sold the farm in terms of draft picks to make it all happen.

Graphic artists have been working overtime photoshopping players' heads onto purple jumpers.

But where does this leave yer Micky Barlows? I haven't seen his head (and obligatory gap) photoshopped onto any other club jumper.

Prior to this trade period we had picks 3, 43 and a pick in the fifties I think. We leave the trade period with pick 7, 43, 72 plus McCarthy, Hamling, Hill and Kersten.
I may be slightly wrong on the lower picks but not by much, I think it is a very hard task master that would be critical of that.
It is harsh reality that older players need to be turned over, just ask Hawthorn. Even if the guys coming in only achieve the heights of those replaced they will do it for longer.
I also like that all of our picks from next year have been retained. With not having our second rounder this year I find it hard to argue that our highest picks in 3 & 43 would make that big a difference in a rebuild. I am also of the belief that SPs will still be there but fear that the club will take English anyway. The proof will be then in the pudding as to who was the best pick but not a judgement on our player trade period.
Big tick for mine.

We went into the trade period needing key forwards and a key defender and pace in the midfield.

" mission accomplished" for little cost.

Excellent work

There was a quote from someone - Bond or Lloyd - a few days ago along the lines of "trading in kpp's means we can now draft best avaiable at 7 rather than filling a gap in the list". I translated that as "We were going to take English but now we'll take SPS"

SPS would be a good pick up; however, (assuming) Clarke will re-sign, a younger ruckman (ie English) who can be developed over the next couple of years would not be a disaster. Having said that, there are other up and coming ruckmen from other states, and from within WA (Darcy Cameron comes to mind) who could be taken with later picks in the lottery.

You could effectively add Bennell for pick 20 something to this years trade list, if you really wanted to give it some discotheque lighting.

Oh won't you take me to

Scratch the no loss of picks next year bit I posted. Can't say I am a fan of swapping future picks, interesting to see who we target.
