It's about return on investment, especially when you have a salary cap. An average AFL salary is $300,000. If Kersten is in the ballpark of an average AFL player, then a salary around that mark is fair for his skill set. But we only get a return on that investment if he actually regularly plays for the Fremantle Dockers. If he's just playing for Peel, then we would be better off having a very young bloke with (questionable) potential taking home the minimum of $75,000, and use the extra $200,000 elsewhere.

Some clubs will take the view that you are better off throwing money at the Franklins and Fyfes of the world in the hope you get lucky with some picks and rookies on low salaries to balance out the squad. Some of those clubs will throw ridiculous money at Fyfe. I just hope we're not ruling ourselves out of matching over a couple of hundred grand because we have players like Kersten on our list.

I think there's merit in spending money to make sure your 18th - 24th best players are better than the other team's. I'm worried that Kersten isn't in our 24 most likely to be selected.

But I don't really know how good he is.

I see Kersten in a similar role to Tabs.

Good cover for injuries, resting players from travel burdens, providing competition for spots. Even if he doesn't rise to our best 24, he''s got value.

If he does step up to force his way in, he's got value. Either way, a late pick that is otherwise of little value and an average AFL salary isn't going to have a significant impact on our chances of retaining Fyfe especially with the rises in the annual salary cap.

Having a winning record and being in contention for flag will have a bigger impact in my view

Don't wish to distort the thread, but,

If Fyfe wants the $1m salary, he'll need to prove he's worth it through his 2017 performance.

Yeti - did you just suggest we would have a congested forward line?

Have you been watching freo for the last 5 years.

Just 1 forward in the forward line would suit me

He's a Brownlow Medallist. He's worth more than Franklin. So barring injury, he'll win another Chas. So he doesn't have to prove much. Therefore, a 6 -7 year contract at $1.2M/yr, should keep the sharks at bay.

To be fair, Ricco, I did say ''potentially' congested

If Tabs suffered from the kick to Pav syndrome, perhaps Kersten suffered from the kick it to Hawkins syndrome?

Old habits are hard broken, so they'll still want to kick to Pav.
On that note, can we get a partition happening to make Pav a goal umpire?

These analyses mostly ignore Yarran who was shaping as the Dockers' most potent forward by the end of the season. Kersten is not a contender for his spot.

Yarran, Walters, McCarthy, Taberner, Kersten looks like it could be a handy F/HF line. The Hobbit is probably going to be ther too. As ever delivery from midfield will determine how well they're able to do.

Hopefully with a fit Fyfe, Bennell, Hills (2 of) Neale and Mundy and Sandilands, we won't be flour bagging it in there all the time.

I think your selling Kersten a bit short Morgan. His record is better than Taberners' as far as goals per game go, and I have yet to see anything that suggests Apeness will make it at afl level. There is room for Yarran, McCarthy and Kersten in the forward line.

Apeness is 21 came off a full season of injury, into a side that was flogged for 5 months solid. Give him a crack next year and see how he goes.

True Drubbing, but WAFL finals of 1 and 2 disposals doesn't fill me with joy and expectation.
