Latest from eagles hq.

West Coast also landed former Hawthorn captain Sam Mitchell effectively for pick No.88, while adding ruck depth in the form of Geelong’s Nathan Vardy for pick No.72.

So in trading for Vardy, the eagles don't rate Sam as a better ruckman than N-N. Not very good judges are they??

You can also upgrade rookies instead of drafting.

In 1992 West Coast used pick 124 to get Brayden Lyle .... that was the highest pick ever used in a national draft....until 2016 where Hawthorn must use pick 126 as it is their third in the draft and each club must draft at least 3 players.

The highest pick Freo have ever used (for a non promoted rookie) was 77 for Chris Hall and Calib Mourish.

Sutcliffe at 71 is the highest ever used for a player who has done something ... Hawks start at pick 88.

This should be interesting

Talk about putting all your eggs in one basket...if O'Meara fails to live up to hype, or gets injured again, it's egg on the face for the Weepoos...

Then all they'll have to fall back on is the other 20-odd multiple premiership players in their squad.

They did get rid of their reigning B&F winner along with the runner-up, Shane...and some of these premiership players of theirs aren't exactly spring chickens...

Interesting The Eagles were given an A for their trade period , But aside from Michell with pick 88 i think they were very quiet , And once you factor Mitchells age , Not so sure they have done that well

Which is all the more reason to make some bold moves for a crack at a fifth premiership now.

The Hawks grand plan is to have all their young players mutate into the team they have had for the last ten years topped up with the GCS version of Morrabito, a young bloke with the same last name and height as Sam Mitchell who is not anywhere near as good, and throwing a gagillion dollars at Fyfe next year. Oh and playing Ty Vickery who always makes me smile because of his heroic action against the flappy monsters at WCE. They have rolled some dice and must be walking bow legged from the size of their cahones, cause they are right out their taking a serious piss into the wind. Clarkson has lost his club appointed manager/minder/advisor and I think he is running amok uncontrolled. Do not be surprised if you see the Hawks training with tinfoil hats on, another master stroke from off the lead Clarko, so that other teams cant scan their brains for his master strategy.
Next year they will lose Gibson, Burgoyne, Hodge and Roughhead is still not anywhere near playing, may never play again. Coupled with losing Lake last year and Mitchell, Hill and Lewis this year, they effectively lose most of their on field leaders and great players. Don't discount the effect of treating club legends like crap either, players will now be thinking if its that easy to get rid of players of that stature, how easy will it be for me to get traded on. Imagine if Freo had traded Pav or AA Luke with one or two years left in them for something like a pick 88. If Omeara is a fail the fans will be out for blood.

The draft is a gamble, especially after round two. You could argue that if there was no rookie draft these players would have been selected later in the national draft. After some browsing I've seen that Sandi was taken in the 3rd round of the 2001 rookie draft (pick 33) after Luke Webster and Josh Head. We only took four players in the national draft so Sandi would have been a round seven selection effectively at around take-your-guess. Yes I know he's a freak and yes that was a while ago when it was more of a lottery however there are plenty of other rookie elevations running around as All Australians.
