It is certainly amongst the job requirements as senior coach to answer the media's questions and be the face of the club when these issues become public. It was probably the biggest criticism of Harvs as a coach and one of CC's biggest talents, media manipulation.
As the coach you have control of your list, what type of player you are looking to draft, what gaps and strengths to fill in your list and amongst these duties, deciding whether a player is worth keeping or not. There are others who know the specifics better like recruiters but ultimately, the coach has the largest say in the shaping of a list. When it comes to players already on the list and whether or not to keep them, the coach would have an enormous say and completely palming off this question is spitting in the face of not just the media but Ballas and us fans.
I personally was looking for assurance from RL and the club after a pretty harrowing few days of rumour that chilled me to my bones (Ballas in an OOFTIT jersey) and he gave me the complete opposite by making it sound like he didn't care for Ballas and he was happy to see him go. It's even been a massive distraction for everyone involved in the club having to deny various rumours and rob a club legend and captain of the correct appreciation for his achievements ahead of game 200. He had a chance to diminish that and chose not to.
