TOPIC: "It's not my decision"

"Serial Pest" is just another Hackdorm untruth. Ballas was always a "cereal pest" being shooed out of the Freo kitchen for trying to eat more weetbix than Grant Hackett

Q. As a coach, do you wanna keep Hayden Ballantyne?

A. It's not my decision.

I'm struggling to find any context about 3 year contracts there. In fact it looks like a pretty straight forward question with little hidden meaning. The correct answer is yes, he's an All Australian and a key member of the side who has bled purple for a long time. It's ridiculous to brush it off as something he has no control over or would like to happen.

He clearly has a say in who stays and goes, most likely more than anyone else and to pretend otherwise is palming off the blame. I feel like I should be using a number of RL's buzz words and cliches here about taking responsibility for your actions and being a no excuses football team but I think that's a bit beyond RL when he's not winning.

In any case the question was "do you WANT to" and the answer he gave was pathetic and wrong.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I'm not sure Ross saying yes would have silenced the current media frenzy.

It's better than saying what he did and fueling it further.

If he had said yes then rather than being a Ross V Ballas thing it would merely have become a Ballas hates Fyfe thing. The media have it in their mind that something is wrong at Freo and think they know what that is and are not going to let it go. Ross may as well have said purple Martians are cool as an answer and that would have meant we are looking at trading people because Martians are from outside the club right? that's code for trade right? Fyfe is talking about looking around yeah? Rift confirmed. Im not bad at this Journo stuff.

I think Ross Lyon was trying to avoid adding fuel to a rumour fire already threatening to burn out of control. The media behave like a dog pack - get the scent and everyone chases the same prey until it's exhausted.
In last night's staged interview on Ch 9, Ballantyne admitted he was casting envious eyes at Eddie Betts' success at a new club, and wondering if he could get some of the same. It stands to reason that he will have said something along those lines to Ross Lyon. Maybe something like "Gimme a 3 year deal or I'll do an Eddie Betts".
Of course, Eddie keeps his feet and scores goals, but ambition can blind reality.

Bizkit, only a minute prior to that question, Lyon had provided details of how Ballas had asked him for a 3 year deal and he had responded to Ballas that he can't help with that. It's for Ballas, his manager and the list manager to deal with.

So, yes, a response of "It's not my decision" was an honest response given the recent context of the questioning relating to Ballas. RoLy could have responded with plenty of alternatives, but "It's not my decision" is factual. Just because it's blunt and dismissive does not mean it isn't accurate or true.

Would you have preferred he responded with "He's a required player" and then when trade period comes around Freo refuses to look at any possible trades even if Ballas wants to be traded.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

Is it a case of RoLy saying, "I can't help with that" as opposed to what he actually meant was, "I don't want to help with that"? If Ballas came to him asking about a three year deal and RoLy saw him as an integral part of the rebuild for the next three years, he would probably have said something like, "Leave it with me young Hayden and I'll see what I can do." He then would have gone straight to Bondy and said, "I want this guy for the next three years, make sure you get the deal done." By making the comment he did, he does not see Ballas as a long term option, thereby wimping his way out of getting him delisted/traded. Do you for one minute believe that if Nat Fyfe came to him with the same question he would have been given the same answer? Ross would have moved heaven and earth to see that the deal was completed ASAP! His moniker 'Ross The Boss' is losing its gloss.

If Fyfe came to him with the same question he could feel comfortable in giving that same answer in the knowledge that it would get done. It's about the processes they have in place and how comfortable they are in them. Lyon bangs on about following processes all the time, is anyone really surprised that he would be process-driven for something like this?

Just one quick point I think most are not seeing here.

If Ross had said yes Balla's is a required player and i want him for three years etc etc.....the very next questions would be asking about each and every single player on the list........where would this lead? More chaos and crap about who would be moved on.

Further if Ross had said he wants him and then he is traded etc this would just ad more fuel to fire of the skeptics etc etc

Ross and to some extent the club are in a no win situation. As evidenced by the media and some of the stuff i have read on here. The media can take free pot shots knowing Fremantle are caught between a rock and a hard place.

I hesitate to add to the rumour mill ... but ... it has been suggested that management is interfering too much or more than Roly would like – or he just accepts the limitations placed on him. Thus his statements like its not my decision. If you go back over the year he has said this sort of thing before. It could just be his public frustration. He is after all 'just' a coach – just another (well paid) hired hand – its not as if he owns or runs the place.

Or a rumour that goes like this

'Hey Roly we want a different style of play – faster more exciting'
-look here I'm the coach, I aaagh...
No Roly you dont get it. We pay for your contract.
-Then I want a five year deal.

So it all gets back to the fact that the WA media make stuff up about Freo, Ross knows that and hates them for it, and he will treat them like the toerags they are. What is the problem???

That's not right Dockerknockers. The context was in the question, "As a coach, do you wanna keep Hayden Ballantyne". "AS A COACH" being the key part for context and "YOU WANNA", as in they asked for RL's personal opinion on whether he'd like Ballas to stay. The 3yr contract was discussed earlier and had been put to bed as something between Ballas manager and Bond.

This was a separate question and RL failed to answer it in any way that would help put out the flames burning down our club. Instead he poured more gasoline on the fire and danced around any indication he even likes Ballas.

As a coach, Harvey wanted Ryan Bastinac instead of Nat Fyfe. Thankfully, it wasn't his call. As a coach, I'm sure Roly would want Ballas next year. But it really just his call. I don't care what the journo thought the context of the question was. The actual context is 'would you give Ballas a two year extension to ensure he will be around next year.' That's the question, it's not an easy one, and Roly doesn't have all the information or I suspect the final say.

And why is it Roly's job to put out the spotfire created by Ballas' manager agitating? Ballas has put his trust in a manager who has decided that the best way to extort a contract out of Freo is, at best, to threaten the request of a trade, and at worst, leak a story to the media about him asking for a trade to West Coast.
