Spurr is the only bloke in the backline that I'm comfortable defending his bloke one-on-one. There's value in that, and if you need to add someone else who can kick the ball to help him out, then that's what you do.

In 2010 Morabito had the equal 5th most clangers for Freo even though he was ranked 22nd in disposal average per game. He kicked 13 goals 18. His disposal efficiency was 65%.
I'm not sure why he can be described as an elite disposer.

What I do remember that was impressive about Morabito, was his acceleration, run and carry (good bounce stats), capable of a quick transition of play leading to good inside 50's and his physicality with his tackling.

He was a player in his first season, he had a lot of adjusting to get used to AFL level footy let alone the high pressure position he played that results in so many clangers. The biggest thing was the way he got the footy and created so much running through and around blokes before disposing of it in creative and damaging ways. You could see how much power and talent he had. Pure stats aren't the measure of that, sometimes you need to use your own judgement and it was pretty clear to everyone he could be special.

I still think he could.

According to the statistics I looked at ( afltables.com/afl/stats/2010.html#8 ), in 2010;
Pavlich had 435 disposals and 60 clangers. That is 1 Clanger per 7.25 disposals.
Mundy had 507 disposals and 46 Clangers. That is 1 Clanger per 11.02 disposals.
Morabito had 304 disposals and 51 Clangers. That is 1 Clanger per 5.96 disposals.

Lachie Neale currently has 74 Clangers, but he also has 661 Disposals and an average of 33.05 disposals per game. That is 1 Clanger per 8.93 Disposals. His Disposal Efficiency is currently about 73%.

I wouldn't say Pavlich is an elite disposer of the ball and yet he had a much better disposal to clanger ratio than Morabito had in 2010.

I've always wondered what the clanger threshold is. When does missing a target become a clanger? Who decides? Is there a review or appeal process? And how hard does a ball get have to be before its an official hard ball get?

Moondingo, Clangers do include Frees Against, so they need to be looked at closely prior to making judgement. Such things as out of bounds on the full and disposals to an opposition uncontested possession, dropped fumbled marks, 50m penalties will all add to Clangers.

I'm not much help in regards to hard ball gets.

Bizkit, the stats actually match up with much of what you describe about Morabito. In 2010, he had good clearance, bounces, goal assists and inside 50s. All that correlates to what you describe about Morabito. I have also stated that I remember he was a good tackler and the stats support that. But what the stats do not show is that Morabito was an elite disposer of the ball.

The point is, the clanger stat only loosely related to how well a player disposes of the ball. You can't just quote it as evidence of good or bad disposal.

Good players with good kicks will often have higher clanger stats because they're given the job of disposing of the ball in situations with a higher degree of difficulty.

A player like Lachie Neale gets the ball and gives it off the the first option available. There are usually a number of options because he gets the ball in the middle and people are running for him. He'll rack up a lot of stats and make less errors.

Where as someone playing off the half back line, like Stephen Hill has to get the ball under pressure and find the least worst option. So he'l have a higher clanger count and a lower possession count.

Look, get real people. What harm is giving Mora a game to see if he's worth persevering with, it's not going to cost us a spot in the top 8, the top 4 or even a home final. It doesn't matter!!
We gave Tanner Smith a game a few weeks ago and he showed, before getting injured, that he could be a valuable member of a new look forward line going forward.

I'd love to see Mora play the next two. But I also think it's almost too late. Does anyone really think that if he got a game, he'd come in and — despite having missed umpteen seasons of football — play such a blinder that he'd earn himself a renewal and promotion?

I wouldn't be expecting him to rate in the top 50% best Freo players on the day, and in saying that I'm not suggesting anything about his potential. Ideally, you'd want to give him at least 3 games to build into it. But 3 games we no longer got.
