DBTS I was stunned by that call on the Spurr mark as well, until I recalled the Matty Carr take the point or have another kick scenario. Then it became clear, the boundary ump decided that he should square up for what happened over the other side of the ground a minute or so earlier.

So a guy inside the boundary line kicks it, and Pav marks a metre inside the boundary line. The boundary line has a nice curve on it. And we are supposed to believe that the kick had more curve on it than the boundary line, so that at some point it went out of bounds? That boundary umpire is not a pedant. He just had a total brain fade and thought it was going out of bounds. When Pav marked it, he just chose to ignore reality and go with what he thought had happened. But wtf does that sort of thing always happen to us?

Is there any footage of this? The only thing I saw was how far in Pav was when he marked it. But I agree with RR, how on earth is that possible unless there was a huge gust of wind just then?

To be honest, off the boot the ball looked for all money to be sailing out of bounds. I was pretty surprised when in landed in Pav's arms in play.

I reckon the boundary umpire was surprised too.

It was Tucker who kicked the ball - a beautiful spiral torp that went 50 up and about 20 forward. Pav marked it at least a metre inside the boundary, it must have deviated in flight by about 3 or 4 metres. I thought it was a beautiful kick, perfect spiral, pointy end up and pointy end straight down. For the quality of symmetry and the cleanliness of grab it should have been awarded as a Pav mark.

I have said it repeatedly - the boundary umps at Subi are the worst in the league. They out-do themselves at a Derby.

Going on some of the boundary umpiring we have seen this year in Freo games, I would be extremely surprised if the boundary ump was even looking at the ball. He was probably watching Balla's and practicing his "Hayden.. Hayden... Hayden..... Haaaaayyyydennnn..." under his breath.

Maybe the field umpire was busy telling the boundary umpire that it wasn't touched, after Tucker was busy remonstrating that it was, and that it was out on the full, and all available brain space for the boundary ump was taken up with the OOBs idea. It looked pretty impossible for the ball to do that, but also agree the spirit of things is usually to pay the mark. The other annoying thing about it was that it distracted from the other impossible call of a throw in instead of OOBOTF or a mark up the other end.

At the risk of having this post removed due to its accuracy that contradicts the original topic, I'm rather puzzled at all the Darling bashing. The facts are; he had 18 possessions, 8 marks and 4 tackles, earning him 80 player points. This made him the 10 best rated Slime player, but if he had been on our side, he would have been rated as our 6th best player. Granted, he never set the world on fire, but he still had better stats/points than 17 of our players.

I'll give you a hypothetical (which may illustrate Darling's capacity clearer): if it was Darling, instead of Pav, underneath Tucker's torp in the air it would've bounced off his scone, probably the back of his head (as he would be facing the crowd with his arms out appealing for something or other).
