A list strategy based around the next 4 drafts?

So, 4 skinny Victorian mids per year = 16 skinny Victorian mids less the 8 that get delisted or go home when their 2 year contracts are up. That will give Roly around 8 skinny Victorian mids to rely for the last year of his contract..

If we truly are looking to take four years to rebuild our list, then somebody down a dooker control has reached the amazing conclusion that our current list is crap. Looks like this year wasn't the aberration most were hoping it was.

The GWS juggernaut is on a roll. While I acknowledged that teams like Melb, Carlton and the dogs have had good years, it's perhaps on the back of several top end draft picks coming to fruition. With the exception of the dogs, these clubs were bottom 4 sides, in the last few years. Melb and Carlton in particular have a shed load of No. 1 draft picks, and top 10 picks. We're now in a position to build since 2008. GWS and Suns will lose several gun players because of salary cap constraints. So maybe the juggernaut might not eventuate as expected.

In the era of salary caps and drafts, AFL footy has become a boom and bust cycle for clubs and their supporters. Without doubt, the worst part of the cycle for supporters is when your club is on the decline. Even if your team sucks, but is improving, you can normally talk yourself into that.

There's been some recent examples - Geelong is a good one - of teams who have fallen from the higher echelons and rebounded quickly. I'm not sure if we are one of those team, but there are some positives in our list to build on.

The real question for mine is whether we have the right people in place to turn things around quickly. Having Roly locked in for 5 years means he can take a longer-term view, which is a positive. Of course, that counts for little if he doesn't have the skills for a rebuild. I guess we'll see.

Personally, I reckon once Cockburn opens, Harris should step aside as President. He rubs me up the wrong way, and has made plenty of calls I disagree with, but he also has some runs on the board, and Cockburn will be his legacy (for better or worse). In the coming years we are going to need an objective view of whether people like Roly and Bond are the men for the job of rebuilding this team. Harris, Rosich Lyon and Bond have been a stable core of the club, but some hard questions will need to be asked over the coming year, and the men who inked a 5 year deal for a coach that led us to a 3 win season shouldn't be the ones to decide to keep pursuing the experiment.

There is an article featuring Rosich "The Turd" on the AFL website , its title is something about the confidence of Fyfe staying with us.

In this article The Turd expands on many things and how moving fwd he will be engaging stakeholders.

And then in the last sentence he sneaks in a four year rebuild. Just like a turd would.

To be fair, he's talking about their list management strategy being based on the next 4 years drafts. There's no implication that's directly related to this rebuild.

In fact, it's a strategy that's no different to their usual list strategy, cos it's the only one they've ever had. They reviewed it this year and found it was tickety boo.

What is suggested by the writer is that there will be a significant clear out at the end of the season.

What does a list management strategy based on the next 4 years mean then?

At Freo, it means they'll look at it again in 4 years time.

I'm not sure it means anything.

But if it does, my best guess is that we had a strategy of drafting 'best available', on the basis that we were picking late in the draft (and were searching for bargains) and that the veteran's discount applied to Pav, Sandi and McPharlin's contracts meant that we had a 'war chest' to spend on free agents to plug any gaps in the list. It was actually a decent strategy, except for they either over-valued how attractive a destination Freo was, or over-valued how good a job they would do at convincing people to come.

If you know you have gaps in your list, aren't going to get many free agents, and are likely to be picking a little earlier in the draft, it would make sense to have a cogent strategy over a number of drafts. You know, something like "we need a tall forward, some outside run, some decent skills in the middle, let's make sure we get all over those things over the next few years".

Or as other teams call it, drafting.

It means what it says. No where is anyone suggesting a rebuild will take 4 years. Any admin would have to be dumb to think you could rebuild a team via a series of draft - it's list managing, not rebuild planning. However, their previous strategy has been to draft whatever best player is going, rather than what's required, and trading for whoever will bother to come. Neither of which work, but are deemed sound at admin central.

We've been smashed by injuries, and had an inability to implement a new game style. Lyon needs to check the mirror hard too.

At least it means we've put 2-3 (Lyon opportunity) years into 6+ blokes in one season. I don't think a rebuild will take 4 years anyway. WE'll clear out some this year, elevate a few and hopefully they'll stop playing canasta during trade week.

I long for the day Harris and Rosich are gone from our club, but I just can't see it happening. They both appear deeply entrenched and enjoy their cushy little roles They barely make a public appearance. I see more interviews with other clubs' presidents than I do with ours. They have no relationship with the supporters, treating us like annoying dirt on the bottom of their shoe.

Like I said, I long for them to be gone, but I worry we will be stuck with them for a long time still.

Our strategy during the compromised draft got us to the GF in 2013. That's better than 16 other clubs since then. Other then Hill and Mora, we took a few mature age recruits and drafting best available to achieve some sustained success. So, the addition of Bennell and last year's draftees was the start of our rebuild. I would imagine, after this year's trade and draft period, we're primed for another crack. Or have I just had too much purple wine already.

I think we can all accept the premise that the AwFuL is a two tier competition.
Let's label these two levels "the favoured" and "the rest".
It's not too difficult to identify some of the favoured clubs: Hawthorn, Sydney, Geelong, West Coast, Adelaide, GWS, maybe Collingwood. Essendumb aren't favoured anymore, of course, but they'll be rehabilitated soon enough. Fremantle are very definitely back there, among "the rest", alongside the other easily identifiable out-of-favour clubs like Port Adelaide, Brisbane, maybe St Kilda.
As one of "the rest", Fremantle will never receive the sort of AFL HQ support that, for instance, facilitated the Buddy Franklin move to Sydney.
As one of "the rest", Fremantle will never be a club of first choice to top notch, experienced free agents.
As one of "the rest", Fremantle will never enjoy the rub of the green with the umpiring department, or the MRP.
As one of "the rest", Fremantle's main role is to make up the numbers. In the view of the AFL, success for a club like Fremantle isn't necessary.
I can't offer any genuine proof for these assertions, of course, but after so many years following the Dockers, and puzzling over the sometimes baffling agendas that the AFL seems to always have in play, I'm cetain that this is how things are.

Yes, Dockermus, I can't help but agree with you. Now if some Freo loving media mogul could buy up channel 7, then we might get a better deal. Oh well.

Well it sure sounds like the top men at the top are expecting it to be a long recovery process...

Rosich confirmed to The Weekend West that the strategy would unfold over several seasons.

“Our list management planning goes beyond the upcoming draft period and extends right through to the next three to four drafts,” he said.

He sounded a lot more confident earlier in the year, when we were only 0-5...
