I don't know where blame for this season sits. I don't subscribe to the view that just because we have had a terrible season wholesale changes must be made. As I've mentioned elsewhere, footy is a boom / bust cycle. Given the cards we have been dealt, I'm not sure whether we made the best of the boom, or how well we are placed to ride out the bust. It's hard to know that from outside a footy club.

But someone has to get to the bottom of that (as Roly would say, it's a results business), and I don't think it should be the same people that put us in the position we are in now. If you sacked a (reasonably) popular coach, poached another at great expense, missed out on a flag, gave that coach a 5 year extension, then saw the fortunes of the team plummet, could you realistically be objective about whether the coach was to blame without considering your own interests? It's a massive conflict, and if the CEO / President / Board think it's in the interests of the club for them to stay on, then they should at least acknowledge that they are conflicted in their decisions, and consider an outside review.

To conduct their own review is either naïve or gutless, and smacks hubris and rank self-interest.

Be careful what you wish for with all of this external review stuff and pent up angst against the footy department. We don't want to become Richmond (pun not intended).

If footy is a boom bust cycle, then some clubs re still booming and others are still busting. Whatever league engineering the AFL does, ain't working.

Why would a private organisation conduct an external review? We're talking potential incompetence here, that's rife is commercial environments. In footy, no promises of a big dividend are ever made. That's why we're punters. Can you imagine Rio's board getting Ernst & Young in to find out why they porked their own shareholders? It's up to a board coup to get those thing looked at.

The FFC board is full of stooges and mates.

Move 1. Get rid of the Steves. Get some admin that understands that footy is not a business, it is FOOTY. Then a lot of the other problems will solve themselves.

My favourite article of the year. Ross Lyon is not short of confidence. He has since admitted he and the coaches were probably negligent in the pre-season. This is a cop-out because they had a clear objective to improve skills and failed miserably. It wasn't negligence it was competence.

Hubris is not a dirty word

I reckon Ross Lyon has lost the players myself. But we won't know till next year.

We took on two coaches who don't seem to have achieved much, lost Kirk, had some major injuries ala Bulldogs, stuffed up a few recruiting decisions and our next wave of good young guys are one year off because we were trying to overachieve with some WAFL and a half types.....simple as that.

Every football club has a culture of nepotism.....it's the nature of the team game. If you happen to create one big happy family everything is hunky dory, or the alternative occurs and it turns ugly and dysfunctional and you have to restructure your way out of it.

That Lyon article is a disgrace.

If you 'utilise' ass coaches so heavily that you don't even feel the need to coach yourself, then he should piss off and let one of them do it. If he sees his job as just directing the coaching staff, picking the team and playing chess in the box on game day, and being the media fall guy, then his priorities are stuffed.

If any of the players feel they've been let down, then it's showing on the field. The difference between the brutal, but not always pretty unit of 2013-14 and this one, is plain to see. It's amazing what could be done with a team light on talent and high on commitment. Take the commitment away and it all turns back to crap.

Clearly RL is a good coach, his results make that clear. But as referenced again in that article, he has failed repeatedly in one clear area - improving our offense.

Every year since coming here he has talked about the need for us to kick more goals, and promised we would change our game to accommodate that. But each year over the past four years, our scoring has actually decreased.

We are further away than ever from being a side capable of kicking 14-15 goals on a regular basis, and nothing in our current structure or style of play suggests we can get there.

I actually think he is out of ideas in this regard.

Drubbing the delegation method is well entrenched at Hawthorn. Lyon attempted to change to that model after some insights coaching with Clarkson on the IRS. Change isn't always easily executed, particularly the sorts of changes like easing control. In my opinion I hope he resets, but continues on with it.

How do you know any of that is accurate, Noddy, and how do you put processes in place to prevent it happening in the future? You have a review.

Who do you get to do the review? Someone other than the people who are being reviewed.

It's why they don't have captain coaches any more.

My concern about R Lyons ability to change things around is based on his past record of coaching defense- minded teams, back as far as asst. coach of Sydney. Arguably that mindset will not now be sufficient to win a premiership.

Having attempted to change the system this year has resulted in a disastrous run of results, which even if improved by 350% will give us fewer points than required for finals next year.

I seem to remember earlier in the year that the word was Roly was approached by one of his underlings and advised he should start taking a more active part in training ,as things weren't as they should be out on the track. Urban myth or otherwise it does fit rather too well with the current state of affairs, and for what it's worth I'm sorry to see Sumich leave in
less than ideal circumstances.

Shane, I agree the FFC at the moment seems to be a dogs brekkie, but I wouldn't throw the baby etc. Its not unusual for internal reviews to occur. They may not be useful, as some external ones aren't.

2016 has been carp as everyone knows, I'll reserve my judgement on whether the Board, CEO, footy manager and coach are savvy enough to dig us out if this hole until 2017 is finally finished.

Lastly, unlike others here, I don't know the 'two Steves', and won't pass comment on them apart from the fact they are accountable for our success and their reputations as does RL depend on turning our fortunes around.

I look at Port Adelaide as being in a similar unexpected trough, although they appear to have a good coach and administration.

200 game Brendan Gale and 300 game Garry Pert are CEOs of shite AFL clubs onfield.

If you're looking to replace management, please explain to me how hiring ex-players helps with anything.

As footy fans, we'd be more than happy to win a premiership at the cost of a huge financial loss. Generally though, you can't have the onfield success without offield stability.
