Polly mentioned this in another thread. What is with Roly that he is not being called out for the miserable performance of his team all year?
No team in the history of the game has fallen away so badly in a season and yet he is still supposed to be some coaching guru.
Hardwick had the blowtorch on him all week and Richmond responded. Leppitsch looks like getting the axe. Malthouse got the boot and copped a massive amount of flak under similar circumstances, yet Roly just keeps on rolling.

And don't mention the injuries anymore. Yes, I know we've got a lot but you only have to go to the AFL injury update to see that there are teams with more than us and to just as many vital players. Western Bulldogs!!! They show fight we show nothing.

Check them out. As for us, Fyfe-extremely important. Johnson-very important but let's be honest, his career is just about over. A Pearce-very important but still just a kid who's played about 20 games. Bennell-could be great but who knows. Talk was earlier this year that he may never play again. Barlow-obviously not important as we can't even re-sign him.
After that it's just a few youngsters who have played less than 10 games or haven't played at all.

Yet so many think we are a shoe in for finals next year in fact someone said top 4 during the week. Top 4!!!
Tell 'em they're dreaming.

I did check out a bit of the Western Bulldogs last night. I believe the final scores were 61pts to 47pts. I'm sure Dockerlanders would love it if Ross Lyon was able to get a win like that.

Little did we know that when all those 4 points were being banked, they were going into an account based in the Canary Islands

Apparently we had 7 players who collectively had only played 22 or so games.

I have no problem with Lyon's rationale with Collins, it's not like we were playing for a spot in the eight. The more experience we get into our young guys the better.

I've long since been a supporter of Ross. I never subscribed to the "Harvey would have won us a premiership" theory and thought Ross really improved the group. The evidence that players seem to want to stick around (I don't think we have not re-signed a player in the team) seems to indicate that things are going well. Pav had only glowing words for Roly in his book, further supporting the positive messages.

However, as this year has gone on, I have got less and less supportive. I have not enjoyed how Ross has continued to back some players (Pearce, the fist) vs throw others under the bus with public comments (e.g. Blakley).

I'm also completely not thrilled how he has "taken" responsibiity while having a underlying tone that his assistants have not performed.

I think someone said it on a previous post - but Ross strikes me as a good leadership speaker. He is the type of guy that can roll out the cliches about management and leadership. But I'm not sure that this has translated into performance. He strikes me as the type of guy that doesn't take bad news / challenge well - which is really bad for someone in his position. What it means is that you get the same type of players that toe the line - good teams need a fair chunk of these, but also need something different - call it "X-factor" if you will.

Very interested to see how things pan out next year with a better list. I don't think anyone could have done much better with the issues we have had this year. He can't delay criticism forever.

I actually like the subtle dig Roly had at Kennedy and the Rosco voting panel in that article.

He's basically said that Kennedy only got that medal because he's put a youngster who has played, what 20 games?, on him.

"We could have made the change a bit earlier, but we thought at least we get a bit of experience here," Lyon said.
"(Eventually), we thought, 'it’s probably time', and I thought Alex Silvagni did a pretty good job.
"… I mean, Kennedy has won the (Ross Glendinning) medal and Collins gets to go away and have a look at it and try and improve."

I reckon Roly made the right move. You can't protect the youngsters and they have to gain experience. Moving him away when things got too hard doesn't help a young bloke develop. If we were playing a game where the result really mattered to our season, Roly would have shuffled the payers around much more.

But the results didn't matter. What does matter is that our boys get better. Roly has been using these games as workplace training. He is doing the right thing for our future. Short-term and fleeting rewards are of no value. Long-term sustained success is of value.

Winning one more game than a basket case organisation in Brisbane leaves a pretty powerful stink that (sooner or later) someone's going to say something about. Losing another Derby sticks you right in the guts - and RoLy is full of baloney.

I have no issue at all and I thought Sam held up well. That was a midfield avalanche.

As for Silvagni well he is just a star but everyone knows that.

So why didn't Collins play on Buddy last week? Didn't need to learn anything then but he did a week later?

We were in with a chance early in this game. Kennedy was the difference. By keeping Collins on him we obviously had no intention of trying to win.

There's also a fine line between learning and being demoralised and feeling like you've let your team mates down.

The Collins decision seems more like a cover up in hindsight than anything else to me. Sure, leave Collins on JJK for a learning experience but when Blakely comes up against the best inside mids in the game there's no learning experience for him, he's getting dropped and left in the WAFL to 'develop his game' because running with the other Kennedy, Hanneberry, Parker, Jack and Mitchell would be horrible for it..

Never mind we were in the game still at qtr time when JJK had clearly outpointed Collins on several occasions rather than writing off the game as a learning experience. Add to that he never threw Collins on Buddy last week at any point. If it was a learning experience against JJK then why drag Collins off him in the last qtr when the result was done? Why move SCOS to him at all?

I reckon he's covering his own backside when he clearly made a mistake playing Collins on him and persisted with it in the hope it would change like RL does with almost every coaching decision.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.
