TOPIC: Some well deserved good news

Morgan's more or less nailed it. Barlow's problem is one of supply and demand, or rather oversupply in our case. He's a brilliant inside mid, but Neale, Fyfe and Mundy are also pretty handy in that role, and now we've got Blakely coming up through the ranks. Barlow got pushed out of the following role by Neale, and that's when his "form dropped".

It really comes down to a question of who do you drop, or push to another position: Mundy, Fyfe, Neale, or Barlow (and now Blakely). You can't have them all on ball. Personally, for depth reasons — but also because I think it's better to plug holes with all-round quality players rather than players best suited to another role entirely — I'd keep Barlow. Rotate Mundy and Fyfe at the centre bounces (Mundy going back and Fyfe forward when not on duty) and keep both Neale and Barlow as followers around the ground and rotating at centre bounces.* (Of course, that's the kind of proposal that gets people up in arms because you're taking the game's best midfielder out of the middle.)

But if Barlow's not going to played inside, then absolutely look to get the best trade for him (hopefully sending him somewhere where he'll be happy). I hate saying that, but the alternative of keeping him at half-forward is just cruel.

Regarding Pearce: he fills a different role, and at time of resigning was leading the competition in Inside 50s. He's always been prone to the odd hack of the ball out on the full, but it's just dumb Freo luck that this inclination took over every ounce of his footy being only moments after he signed the 2 year extension.

*Disclaimer: I know nothing at all about football, so this is probably a ludicrous idea.

Give Mick Barlow a new contract!
He's an inside midfielder and enjoys getting at the fall of the ball; he's got guts and finds the ball.
If Freo doesn't give him a contract another team will and we will be regretting the decision.

Morgan. I'm not sure a team will give away a 2nd round pick for an uncontracted player. Why would you? If we were going to try trade Barlow he would of been given an extension half way through the year and not dropped back to Peel.

So from what Morgan and others have said, our problem is that we've recruited too many midfielders. Why has no one brought this up earlier!

maybe not that big a surprise...... I never quite understood why Luke Ball was traded from St Kilda, to me he is a similar type of player to Barlow

He'll be in a West Coast jumper next year.

Morgan
Mundy: Pick 19
Fyfe: Pick 20
Neale: Pick 58
Barlow: Rookie

I'd probably use a different example to criticise Freo's drafting.

Everybody loves Mick. If you don't you have no heart or soul or you are an Eagles supporter.
How many years of footy do you reckon he has left in him now though? As the game gets quicker and as the focus shifts to speed and skill (rightly or wrongly) then I think he gets left behind.
From a commercial perspective Freo should get what they can when they can and from Micks perspective hopefully he gets another couple of years somewhere.
He will always be a Freo man in most people's eyes.

He is only 28 and still playing top quality football. I would have thought he was easily worth two more years.

Morgan and then somethingstupid nailed it.

Fyfe forward, Mundy back, Barlow middle, we're happy.

Now, need some magnets.

Snoop, that was my first reaction too, and it's still worth trying. But I think the idea of Fyfe forward, Mundy back is better in theory than practise.

I was a disappointed in the way Mundy played down back this year. It seems like it would be a natural fit - he's got good size, great skills, and spent time there as a (maligned) young guy. He could wind down his career as a better version of Duffield. Except he was lousy this season in that role, and I don't really have an explanation for why.

Fyfe forward also presents it's own difficulties. He's an elite mark matched up against midfielders. Would he be an elite mark against blokes bigger than him? He's not quick enough to beat anyone on a lead. His best go is drifting forward and exposing match-ups, rather than being stationed forward. Roly intimated earlier this year that Fyfe was reluctant to go forward, which was interesting to me.

It feels like surely you can rotate different players through different parts of the ground, but I just don't think it's as easy as all that. I mean, if you read this article, you'd have sworn Roly felt the same way we do. www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/ross-lyon-jok...20160204-gmlvm4.html

In answer to your question Morgan about Mundy and why he didnt seem to excel down back. Ive got two observations that might explain it, firstly he`s slow and second, he is not great with the contested marking. Hes got great evasive skills which buy him time in the contest but not elite closing speed to catch a forward.

I would have like to have seen him there consistently for a month or so, to prove me wrong and so we could have a real good look at him back there as the answer to this question is critical. As everyone says, the answer to this then feeds into what we do with Barlow.

The answer to whether Fyfe is capable of playing forward is a resounding and obvious YES, in my opinion. Of course Fyfe could play full back, wing, forward pocket, coach etc etc so I suppose its not saying much.

Anyone rating Neale or Blakely over Barlow, in any aspect other than perhaps speed off the mark has rocks in their head.

Anyone thinking Fyfe should play a role other than midfielder who drifts forward occasionally for a leap-in-from-the-side mark and a goal has rocks in their head.

Anyone thinking Ross Lyon is adaptable and has (or has ever had) a plan that matches up with any kind of recruiting strategy has rocks in their head.
