TOPIC: Wallis and the Bulldogs

391 Wallis and the Bulldogs 7 years 9 months ago #1

I am a little concerned I've become the cynic #keyboard warrior hiding behind an online pseudonym and with a disclaimer that comparing injuries between players with zero medical training and not having actually witnessed the Wallis incident is clearly highly fraught with danger ... (and hoping he can make a swift and full recovery)

BUT ...

My love for one M. Barlow wants me to remind the football world that despite his tib and fib flopping around below the knee he stood up to take his kick.

But we can't see fit to find a place for him on our list yet next year. 28 yrs old.

Meanwhile D Pearce gets a two year contract extension deal. 30 yrs old.

Don't get it.

I'm not an MD myself 391 but I do know that shock can impact on people in different ways.

Barlow tried to to get up and I'm pretty sure he didn't know his leg was badly broken. Shock may have actually prevented him feeling pain at first, I don't know.

What I do know is that Wallis did feel a lot of pain and understandably so and he has a long and difficult road in front of him before he even looks at a footy field again. I personally just wish the kid all the luck in the world and hope he recovers well.

Had it been me, I'd have cried like a baby and not felt ashamed one bit

When I was 19 I busted my leg in three places when a car u turned across me on a motorbike. Tib, fib and compound femur. I had a gf on the back and she landed in front of me... in the shock I tried to get up and help her and it felt like I had two knee joints. Looked down and all hell broke loose when I saw what had happened. Then I screamed like an air raid siren for quite a long time.

You can't judge someone's reaction. I was the best air raid siren you've never heard.

It was so traumatic for the Doggies that they had to bring in the counsellors - Channel 10 News.

See where you are coming from 391. I am sick of hearing commentators rave on about how brave the cats players are, how brave the suns players are etc. Never hear them say anything when a Freo player runs back with theflight of the ball, unless it is to snipe that he may be cited for high contact, or forceful front on contact. We must have the most gutless footballers in the AwFL or the commentators are fawning mudsucking imbeciles.

Here's me thinking this is yet another thread about trading in a contracted player...

I fractured my leg playing footy and couldn't walk off the field. Had to hop off and spent the next 6 weeks in plaster (fibreglass actually).

A fracture was painful enough so I can only imagine what a broken leg would feel like.

I might be mistaken, but I didn't think 391 was denigrating Wallis for his reaction to his injury, but merely reminding us of that moment when Barlow broke his leg. I'll never forget the crowd's (and the commentators') horrified reaction when Barlow tried to stand up and we could see that his leg was on a bizarre angle. Obviously there are varying reactions to injury depending on the nature of the break, or whether the person is in shock or not. It was hard to watch the Wallis incident because he was obviously in extreme pain and it was clearly very distressing and traumatic for his teammates.

Of course, on AFL360 they recalled and replayed similar incidents, but ignored the Barlow break. The thing about his injury is that he was possibly on the way to winning a Brownlow in his first season, the injury cruelled our chances of finals success, and it took years for him to recover. So, like the Wallis injury, pretty tragic and sad.

One can only hope Wallis has a quicker recovery.

Fair enough I'll cop the whack hypen but yes more peeved about AFL / media reaction when our lads get no 'love' or 'respect'.

The Carey / Harvey media this week has made me laugh at how quickly Harvey backed down after making allegations against 'Duck' in his book. This is the same bloke media are fawning over in my mind fabricated evidence at the Tribunal because Crowls towelled him up ... and yet not a single challenge or thread of narrative questioning his integrity over either incident

Carey is not beholding to the AFL for anything, he is in general a straight shooter who calls it as he sees it. This is born out in his commentary when he will quite often be at odds with his fellow commentators views and he never buys in to the fawning puke riddled style of banging on about how awesomely awesome a team or player is. It's why rather than meekly accept that Harves has the right to do and say what he likes, because he is the AFL poster boy of the moment, he publicly returned fire and called him out on a mistruth. Carey is no angel and certainly has stuffed things up in the past, but he seems to be trying to move on and be a better person, unlike some other troubled champs of the past.
Props to you guy for being an air raid siren, I have always wanted to be a fire truck actually.

The Barlow leg incident reminded me of a Melbourne Cup runner that fell and then tried to get up with a broken leg. The screen came out then - I guess Barlow should be glad he's not a horse.

I'm not one for getting injured much, but I did break my collarbone falling off my bicycle a couple of years ago. I knew something wasn't right, but I rode on and met my two mates for breakfast in Freo, and then rode to Fremantle Hospital after that.
