TOPIC: These stats don't lie!

Eventually These stats don't lie! 7 years 9 months ago #1

Eventually
I had a feeling a few players went missing on the Gold Coast and the following stats tell a sad story-
Marks
Nil - S Hill, N Suban, J Griffin
1 - Z Dawson, C Sutcliffe
2 Mayne, Weller
3 Ibbo, Crozier, Clarke
So no one wanted to kick to our most skillful player Hill? And why were the rest of these players avoiding making a lead or going up for a contested mark?
Kicks
1 - Zac Clarke, Mayne
2 - Griffin,Dawson,Suban
4- Sutcliffe
How can we ever expect to win a game when more than a quarter of the team cannot get more than 4 kicks!
This is a disgrace Mayne, Sutcliffe, Suban, Zac Clarke and Dawson should be dropped this week and replaced with Pav, Tucker, De Boer, Apeness and Silvagni in a like for like swap that would deliver IMO far better value!

I suppose Dawson could use the same argument as Hilly and ask why no one wanted to kick to him, him being so skillful and all...

You idiot Rhufus. Hill probably didn't get many marks, coz he was doing the kicking, and Peter Featherby is the only player I remember whose kick was so short and up and under that he could mark it him self.
And as for Dawson, everyone knows you can't mark a handball.

Eventually
Certainly not blaming Hilly for not talking a mark he was setting up everyone else but I cannot for the life of me understand why coming out of the backline we wouldn't be looking to handball or kick to Hilly every time! This is a glaring stat IMO we are not getting the ball to our best users. Instead we keep kicking it to out on the full or direct to the opposition!

The facts of the matter are stark and damming : we have at best 6 A grade players and approximately 6 B grade players of high WAFL/VFL level.... the rest are players who have not improved to AFL level in terms of skill and potential.
We are now kidding ourselves again with a B Hill homecoming... Now if we had 22 B Hills along with Fyfe, Neale, Walters, Sandilands, Ballantyne and Mundy it would be different but when we have 20 dead weights dragging the average down we get what we deserve! Humpf!!

The facts don't lie.... only the Bombers and Lions are worse than us and the Suns who have just as many injuries if not more pantsed us easily.

Apart from ....a coaching group that appear to be dysfunctional, list management that has us without any quality back up ruck besides the BIG fella, selecting blokes who make more turnovers than a Nannas apple pie factory and on-field leadership and performance being affected by the first point.....we are doing great.

I think we can read a fair bit into the Gold Coast game, and it isn't pretty. All season we've been able to use the injury excuse and convince ourselves that all will be ok when our injured players return next year.

But Gold Coast had just as many important outs as we did:
Freo: Fyfe, Bennell, Sandilands, Johnson, Barlow, Ballantyne, A Pearce, McCarthy (hopefully)
Suns: Ablett, Rischitelli, Swallow, Prestia, O'Meara, Hall, McKenzie, Rosa

If you add those players into their respective teams, who starts 2017 with the better list? With their wealth of young talented KPPs already on the park, I reckon Gold Coast does.

That's how far we are from being a contender again, behind Gold Coast. It's going to be a long slow rebuild. Not that it won't be enjoyable to watch some of our youngsters develop, and we will get back up there, but it ain't happening in 2017.

Well Purple Mao not sure if you were on here a week or two ago, but the majority of responses to my questioning on whether we would bounce back next year was a big yes. Finals for us in 2017.
Couldn't really see it myself. Wonder if the game changed some opinions?
The thing is, there a re a lot of teams improving around us, but not a lot stagnating or getting worse, so for me it's a bit hard to see at least 10 teams being below us.
Probably-Essendon, Brisbane, Richmond.
Possibly-Collingwood, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Carlton
Hopefully-Slime

You only had to look at their forward line of Lynch, Wright and Day to know that we were going to have to play out of our skins to win.

The blokes who had 4 kicks or less would have gotten a fair old rocket from the boss today I suspect. Add to that Mundy and Pearce turning the ball over in the back half and it's a miracle we only went down by 4 goals.

RideoftheVagaries
Our supposedly most skillful player in Stephen Hill had the third worst disposal efficiency (66.7% - 37th in overall DE% ranking) out of the top 20 kick-getters for the day. The second worst was Neale (64.3%, 38th in DE% ranking)

To me the biggest issue this year is not personnel (other than perhaps the ruck void), but rather the wobbly decision making and second guessing, which stems from difficulties adjusting to a different game plan. I still contend a fair portion of that difficulty in adjusting comes from both the highly defensive style of the previous game plan and the level of indoctrination they had in it.

Davo These stats don't lie! 7 years 9 months ago #14

Davo
Gold Coast are very hard to beat on their home ground. Freo had the longest trip in football and did well for a half.

There seems to be one quarter in every game where Freo get outscored by 4-5 goals and that is often the final margin.

More worrying is the inability to score more than 12 goals which has been the problem for over 12 months now. Hard to win games of football when it's this low every week.
