Interview was surprising in that Jacko made some intelligent comments amongst making it clear that he did not like Mike.
His take on the majority of modern footballers being blokes with big muscles who run fast and jump high but have average football skills was one point of note. To me it's no coincidence that some of the best footballers (Sam Mitchell and Nat Fyfe are two that spring to mind) getting around were taken down the order or as rookies. Some of our best Rookies were Sandilands, M Johnson and Sam Collins looks set to fall into that category. It makes you wonder how many really good footballers are out there running around in the seconds because they could not meet the stringent criteria set by the AFL draft.
I still reckon the way the AFL draft operates is flawed as it is based on the NFL and NBA style of drafting. The major important difference is their drafts are based on selecting guys that have been in a standardized national system for a four year period. Their players are also being drafted into the top tier at 22 not 18. Their draft product is a lot more polished and ready to go than the AFL's, in short you have a much better idea of how a player will perform. Drafting kids one year out of high school, particularly if they have very limited or no travel exposure, is a much riskier proposition.
