I think we all agree we could do with some more players with silky skills on our list. White, black, gay, straight, Jew, Christian - just so long as they have freakish skill sets.

I think it's a long bow to suggest Lyon ever implied anything racial. He was stating a fact. Walters and Hill are top line players. Most of the rest aren't. Some aren't ready, and some never were. Two blokes can't carry a whole team.

I understand the romanticism, but it frequently does go into some questionable territory. It was a bit of a stretch for example to claim that the Hill brothers would share a Krakoueresque understanding presumptively because they are Aboriginal. The Krakouers played a huge amount of games together, have Brad and Stephen played any together?

It is apt in the context of this forum. Lyon remarked that today two guys carried the team. I agree he was not making reference to them due to their indigenous heritage but rather how they performed today. ‘The Prince’ Initially raised an observation that people often refer to indigenous Dockers when citing passages of play they’d like to see. I don’t think, although it may to some, it has anything to do with their cultural heritage but rather the way those players play the game. That they happen to be indigenous is incidental to my way of thinking. They just play good footy. Hope that makes sense.

The Prince

I reckon if you fed every thread that's ever happened on this forum into a database, and associated each one with the relevant player, you'd find that it would be proportionate according to the ratio of players of Anglo-European or Indigenous origin.

As previously noted, because the Noongar players have a special connection amongst themselves, many of us relish the thought of this translating onto the field.

The end goal being the Dockers win more games.

Prince if you honestly think that the likes of Judd, Matthews, Daicos, Hird etc have not been sufficiently celebrated and talked about til the cows come home for years and years in general footy commentary, then I don't know what planet you've been on.

I think it's a fantastic thing to celebrate the way indigenous players wearing purple play and how many of Freo's indigenous players could string together some mesmerising movements of the footy. It's one of the reasons I first started supporting Freo as a kid, watching the likes of Kickett and Dhurrkay run around before my favourite player Steven Koops was leaping over every opponent he saw.

The great support the Fremantle Football Club has provided many of the star indigenous footballers of the past 20 years is something I think should be promoted and celebrated rather than labeled as racial stereotyping. Sure, other non-indigenous players could be used in these theoretical situations but I like to imagine the sublime skills of a Hill, Walters and Bennell complimenting each other as they are our best users of the footy regardless of race.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Well for me, when I hear Hill to Bennell to Yarran, i do hear it with an edge of romanticism and it is because they are indigenous but for me it is all about celebrating indigenous role models which I think we need more of. It's also about acknowledging what some of these players have overcome to get onto an AFL oval and in some cases it is very different to those that a white kid from a private school has over come. Generalizations I know but it works for me.
It certainly doesn't detract from what non indigenous players do but it does hit a chord with me.
There I said it.

Ok, I'll say that there are too many big dumb white fellas in the game today. There, I've said it (and I'll sign off like everyone else).

I'll just add to polly's comment that there's also just too many big dumb white fellas talking about the game today.
