TOPIC: Racial stereotyping in footy? I went there...

The Prince Racial stereotyping in footy? I went there... 7 years 9 months ago #1

The Prince
I have noticed that many fans fantasise about plays involving indigenous-only players. Recent examples on Dockerland include:

"Can you imagine Johnson kicking it out of defence to the Hills who share it between themselves as they run down the ground and pick out Walters or Yarran in the forward 50."

"Oh the joy to see Walters to Bennell to Yarran, put down your glasses.."

..instead of including other contemporaneous players with similar freakish skill sets such as fyfe, ballantyne, mundy, Daicos, Milne, Ablett(s), Naitanui, Hungry, Matthews, Hird, Todd, Judd, etc etc.

I believe this to be an unconscious phenomenon. I have noticed it frequently over my 40 years following the game.
It makes me feel slightly uncomfortable.

Is it just me?

It's not just you but it's probably not worth the argument.

No it's not just you, it's an acknowledgement and admiration that 99% of indigenous players have a "magic" on the footy field that the rest of us non-indigenous citizens can only marvel at.

Plus Fyfe and Ballantyne are not elite kicks, Mundy is slow, Daicos, Milne, Hird, Todd, etc are no longer playing and the rest are ex slime. Thats why we want to see Bennell, Yarran and Walters because of their skills, speed and decision making. Also I think its OK to celebrate Freos extraordinary history with the Indigenous players. Whilst it might not be exactly PC, they do form a little subset amongst the playing group. They have a special bond together, you always see them together at functions and in photos. I think its OK to talk about the indigenous guys as a group. They do.

But Shane is probably right, this is a can of worms, Im signing off.

Only have to look at Mikeys run from half back (in all sorts of trouble) through the middle in the last quarter to see why some of us enjoy watching them play. Skill. and exhileration all in one play. And I will sign off too.

Whats the subconscious bias towards white players who wear their hair in a bun come from Lake Grace and walk around in stupid glasses called?

Other than Fyfe, name a white bloke on our list who inspires right now.

Well go back and see if anyone has talked him up on D/land.

I think a few have.

Hypen is trying to be smart by saying you can't collectively like a group of people who all happen to be very good at the football but put it this way. If you want to declare you're love for a particular group of people based on their race, and you've ever have a bad word to say about Danyle Pearce, you can only be correct about one of those things.

PS, I reckon it's the pure footy players that most of us love on Dockerland, now it may just be a coincidence but............

"Lyon was happy with the games of Michael Walters (four goals) and Stephen Hill, but said they didn't get the support they needed. When they were humming, we were humming, but as they slowed, we slowed" ... How apt :)
