TOPIC: Great Desperation all Game

Where's the myth Sutcliffe is a good one on one player come from?! He loses those battles all the time despite us always having extra numbers back to help out.

That first quarter football where we played on and attacked rather than holding the ball up and switching to the other wing only to turn it over when nothing presents because we've taken so long was fantastic. Why doesn't RL let the players do that every game and why did he stop them doing that after the first quarter?
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

It's hardly 'celebrating' - it's about having a balanced perspective.

Dangerfield was gifted 2 goals. We had play-on momentum snatched away from us twice, which offered scoring opportunities with a open forward line. We lost Barlow early who was helping us win the stoppages. That was the difference in that game.

When your team gives it their all like we did last night, it's definitely a positive.
I think Pav needs to find those boots he was wearing a few years back. You know, the ones that were responsible for weekly 5 bags.

I would like us to bundle Sutcliffe and Sheriden up and see if we can get a second round draft pick for them, time and time again last night these two players were giving the ball back to Geelong in turnovers and that cost us any chance of winning.

They've had enough time and chances to improve , I want them out of Freo .

I think Sutcliffe can play the third tall defensive forward. He can mark it, he's a big lad and quite quick for his size. He has got great attributes, he's just a terrible decision maker and field kick. So don't play him on the last line of defense. Maybe on a wing or forward. His set shots seem ok.

I like this idea that we played quick, attacking footy in the first quarter and then Ross called them in at the quarter time huddle and told them to stop it.

Seriously.

According to Jezza we lost that game in the midfield. I thought the midfield battle was quite even, the two standouts being Dangerfield and Hill.
So the fact that we went inside 50 more than them and couldn't score or look like taking a mark must be the midfielders fault?
We don't have marking options and rely on too few too often. Ballas was injured, Pav is sadly passed his best and shouldn't have been expected to carry the load he still does, Tabener is still inconsistent, Weller does the occasional good thing, we don't have a goal kicking ruckman and Mayne doesn't really deserve a game. Thank god for Son Son.

Last night Mayne had 8 disposals, Ballas 6 and Griffin 8. The only Cat with less than 10 possessions was Hawkins with 8.

As for marks, Griffin-0, Tabener-5, Pav-6, Weller 2, Walters-4, Ballas-2, Mayne-1
Geelong-Hawkins-3, Menzel-4, Stanley-3, Kersten-7, Smith-6, Duncan-5

Whether all these were taken inside 50 of course is unsure but no matter how good our midfield is you still need a decent forward line to finish things off otherwise why have any big forward or backs and not just play a team of midfielders.

Ballas had more falls than possessions. When is he going to wear a proper pair of boots?

Sutcliffe is asked to play on talls much too often because RL doesn't like to play tall defenders unless their name is Dawson. He is no good in the air though and gets out bodied pretty easily. He's not fast either but does have a tank to run all day which seems to be RL's #1 prerequisite to play in his side.

When you look at someone like Ethan Hughes, he's bigger than Sutcliffe and a very good mark, especially for his size. He has more pace than Sutcliffe but not the engine yet. Both struggle to dispose of the footy well but Hughes is a lot younger with a lot of time to work on it. From what I've seen so far he's also a much better decision maker despite his lack of experience.

I'm praying for some luck with injuries for Hughes to get him in the side and ready for next year. Dropping Sutcliffe and Sheridan from the side will do wonders for our rebound from defence, especially now we have Crozier learning the trade back there.

Put him on someone even remote to his size and he will beat him most times, he is a good footballer in the wrong position.

I've noticed with Sutcliffe that he focuses so intensely on his player that he misses the opportunity to get to the ball first.
On the other hand Crozier, who I'd thought of as a glory hound has eyes for the ball at all times has flourished given the chance to take that speccy, bugger tackling get the ball first.

Listening to Luke McPharlin on the radio, Ibbo and Enright were both playing loose men in defence so definitely a win for them. In the last quarter Ibbo went on to Enright. Smart move but maybe should have been made earlier.

Any time Sutcliffe plays on a small forward they run rings around him and have a massive influence. Even last night Danger didn't even notice Sutcliffe playing on him, he was barely at the standard of a witches hat.

I am with Biz on Sutcliff, too easily out marked and when he does get it often his disposal hurts us, thought his mark and goal was pretty good, so maybe we could throw him forward while ballas is injured to see if he can provide something there, if not think we should move him on, would like to see Mora replace him in the back line.

As for Ibbo, not sure how he was the loose man in defence? Thought he spent most of the night on either Kersten or Stanley, both of whom are taller and stronger than him.
