This 10 metre zone rule is an elusive thing.

I'm not watching, but I'm guessing it's only elusive for one team.

Never seen a worse umpiring exhibition in a game that didn't involve Freo.

Hard to envisage any other team playing for the cup than the two who played tonight.

Roly's famous words, "We're all chasing Hawthorn". To think otherwise, is just not logical. Free kicks or no free kicks, they're a champion team. I go back to the 2013 GF. We're the only team to get close to them in the big one. And by the way, most of the free kicks were correct, if not all

Why is it that whenever there is a lopsided free kick count in a game not involving Freo on the receiving end, the media are all over it, but when we are the recipients of the shaft, the silence is deafening. Freo management is criticised for not getting stuck into umpiring and MRP inconsistencies, but other teams have the media in their corner before the final siren sounds. WHY???

Even if as you say Jezza, most of the free kicks for Hawthorn were really there or not, the number that were not paid to Sydney that should have been as always needs to be taken into account.
When two teams are so close all night, both hard at the ball, both playing the ball and not the man and early in the last quarter the free kick count is 13-4 then one team is being favoured.
The fact that the home team received such a poor run is also unusual.
And what's with this sudden crackdown on getting close on the mark? Typical umpiring-a flavour of the week rule from nowhere that we see for a couple of weeks that then is forgotten about.(remember the Spurr incident a few weeks ago?) Two of those 50m penalties where the Sydney players were supposedly too close would have had no influence on the player taking the kick. They weren't interfering or in the way at all.
It sh**s me when a game's result is decided by umpires and this was one of them.

Hodge pins the arms of the Sydney player and slings him into the ground, the guy's head striking the ground.
The umpires miss it ... another MISSED call.
The commentary team silent for a few seconds then come out with the call of just a strong tackle. And if it had been Fyfe ...

Yes CA and also compared to what happened to D Pearce last week.
Demo1, you may be right in that observation. Watching games on TV and listening to the commentary, I'm sure that either the commentators are mostly not watching the game, or the video feed and the audio feed are from 2 different games.

Its pretty obvious that you have to win without the help of the umps.

And that 10m exclusion zone is baffling. Can anyone go in the 10m zone if a teammate of the guy with the free is in the 10m zone? What if the teammate leaves the 10m zone and you take your own good time getting out - is that all hunky dory, or is it a 50m penalty?

But (and I'm ashamed to say this), I'm starting to really enjoy Thursday night footy. That is what comes from being old and boring and having nothing better to do than hope that for once its the Hawks getting bashed up and not their opponents.

The 10m exclusion rule is a dog's breakfast this year (no doubt) - yet it doesn't surprise me that there were so many last night. Sydney and Hawthorn of two of the biggest mark encroaching teams in the AwFL, they always press towards the kicker and I'm pleased that they got hammered last night. It has become so habitual with them they simply couldn't get it right - penalty after penalty and they kept pressing for another. Whilst umpiring isn't an exact science, everyone working on a building site knows what 10m is. 10m is 10m - it's not like some abstract painting, a theological metaphor, a weird spot on Uranus (or something).

In my view, if a bricklayer understands what 10m is, so should a football player.
