TOPIC: Mundy as captain - thoughts?

Quiexo Mundy as captain - thoughts? 7 years 9 months ago #1

Quiexo
I'm intrigued to know what my fellow Dockerlander's thoughts on Mundy as our captain, given that we have a reasonable sample size of 15 games. Yes, I know that different captains have different leadership styles, and yes, our average/crappy performances as a team throughout the year has to be taken into consideration when assessing Mundy's captaincy. But I don't know whether it's just me, or whether the captaincy almost sits, well, uncomfortably with him; he doesn't come across as a natural born leader, one who can inspire his teammates, grab the game game by the scruff of the neck and will the team towards a win (sorry about all the cliches), like Selwood, Tex Walker etc. Again, I'm not having a go at him as a player, because it goes without say that he is a gun; but as a captain, I have to admit I'm yet to be convinced...

Sort of see we're you're coming from Quiexo but I don't think it would matter who was captain this year. Certainly would not have made much difference if Pav was still the leader.

Mundy got the rough end of the stick as far as timing his go at the captaincy that's for sure. In some ways it has been just another bloody change.

I was thinking the other day when there was talk about Fyfe's just missing out on the role and I'd really feel for Mundy if he were to miss out on the captaincy when they vote for it next year. Effectively he'd never have had a chance to settle into the role. But by the same token picking a senior guy you'd want them to settle the ship and keep it steady as she goes from the get go, which was probably too big an ask.

It'd be interesting how much he's been working around the club, as much as what's been happening out on the field. He didn't really have a proper pre-season to be as effective on the field as he would normally.

We live in an era of leadership groups. All good teams have several leaders across all lines and then some. I doubt that with Pav not being Captain this year, he has been any less of a leader on and off the field. Likewise, I would expect a fit Fyfe to have been leading on and off field just as much this year as he would have if he was voted Captain. I am not sure they vote every year - only when a vacancy arrives.

As for Mundy in the role - he can call a coin toss as good as the rest of them.

But the hair cut mid year is not on. Never happened before and just because you're captain you don't mess with tradition.

I think the Captains Goal like Pav does or the captains save as say D Glass used to run the ball out of defence, or the Captains dive like Selwood does in a pack situation seems to inspire players more than accumulation of the ball. When Pav kicks a goal against the flow for example and follows it up with a big mark or another goal, players say to themselves jeez the boss is putting in the big ones and putting his body on the line, I had best get stuck in to. It is obvious to all at the ground that the Captain is doing his bit. Mundy on the other hand can trot about doing one percenters and setting up play all day and not really get noticed (this is reflected in a player of his ability having stuff all Brownlow votes). His effort is just as important probably even more so but the crowd don't cheer his accumulation style of footy. They like the speccy marks, massive tackles and fancy runs down the wing. Its all about perception and Mundy, as classy as he is, is not a flashy player. In fact trying to be that sort of leader may well be messing with his usual game style. Fyfe has all the attributes of the inspirational Captain, and it would need no change to the way he plays to take on that mantle.

Does that then make Danyle Pearce the anti-captain, one amazing turnover after another. They certainly take the sting out of other players good efforts and you can see teammates heads drop when he gets run down as he did on Saturday and then bombs another kick out of bounds or to an opposition player.

Nothing against Mundy but I think he has been pretty lacklustre as captain. I agree teams need a captain that does the inspirational things during the game. Leadership off the field in terms of standards and what not, can be driven by the leadership group.

I do wonder whether some of our issues this year were caused by a schism in the group due to a close vote or contentious decision. Wouldn't have mattered as Fyfe was injured all year anyway.

I hope Fyfe gets it next year. He fits the bill in a number of ways.

And agreed Gumnut. I hope they re-signed D Pearce to trade him. I can remeber at least 3 turn overs from him on Saturday night that just sapped the team confidence. The one where he could not have missed the tackler closing in and yet still played on was horrendous.

Trade him! Who's going to want him? He's already 30 and what would he offer to another side?

Why the hell we re-signed him for two years amazes me. Another one to chalk up Bond & Lloyd?

When the game is on the line, and the opposition are throwing everything at you, there's nothing more inspirational than a real leadership group member's goal.

CA- I was joking. No one will want him so we are stuck with him. But he is the type of player we need to shed in my opinion.

Raglan Matt Mundy as captain - thoughts? 7 years 9 months ago #13

Raglan Matt
Roodawg that tackle and free kick against him in the middle should have been 50 mt to Freo and a possible goal. The player who tackled Pearce was inside the 10 mt protected zone, and the umpires were at fault not Pearce. Just another example of "it's only Freo we will not worry about the rules as they are written". Not one commentator picked up on the illegality of the tackle, but they all thought that Ballas would get time, Walters didn't hold the mark and Weller is a cheap sniper.

It's not the captain's job to be the only one able to make an inspirational play at a key point in the game.

I can think of moments like Leo Barry's mark, Scarlett's toe poke and dare I say, Chick's smother. I can also re-count times where Buddy has dragged the Hawks back into game, hell even Jack Riewoldt has done that.

Fyfe played with a broken leg, twice, as wasn't captain.

You don't need to be Captain to be inspirational, and the other 21 aren't stupid enough to leave it to you to do something special.

Who really knows what the on-field difference is between a Fyfe and Mundy as Captain, and from our point of view who cares, it was the other blokes on the field that gave it to Mundy - and that's all that matters. He is probably a sensational two-up player.
