I've long advocated for a match review to award points for 'unsportsmanlike behaviour' At the moment, the threshold and penalty for flopping are too high, so they don't get enforced. I reckon that players should be awarded demerit points for flopping, and also for arguing with an umpire (when not justified). Once you get to a certain number of points, you get a fine, and beyond that miss a game.
So, let's say you appeal that you touched a ball that went through for a goal, and the video shows conclusively that you didn't. You are basically cheating, right? You get a point.
Let's say you clearly throw the ball, the umpire calls a throw, and then you argue that you handballed. You are basically lying. You get a point.
Let's say you are Jack Darling, and you throw your head back every time someone touches you. You get a point.
However, I think you should also be able to get credits to recover points. For example, an umpire completely blows a call against you, you get back a point (ie, an unfair 50m penalty). Or you put your hand up to say you didn't touch the ball. You're a good sport and you saved everyone 3 minutes. You get a credit point.
There aren't enough incentives for good behaviour, or disincentives for cheating. The league doesn't want to accuse players of cheating, but I think a cumulative approach would be worthwhile.
We just need to wait until Hayden Ballantyne retires.
