TOPIC: The 2017 Bounce Back Myth?

From the last couple of losses against teams in the lower half of the ladder my impression is that we've not been beaten by teams because they out-starred us with better personal and talent.

It feels more like we got beaten by these teams just by them do the basics better than us - the tackling, the smothering, the manic numbers pressuring and closing down space of the opposition the ball carrier to turn the ball over - something for all its lack of appeal, we were nearly the best at over the last 4 seasons - and now its something we can't handle when its put on us.

Yeah I know you didn't say those things Agarn, those were just some of the things that had me raising an eyebrow at exceeds' post.

Agree that the tackling has gone missing too Chewy.

RTB's first half season at Freo, when he changed the game plan saw results that were similar to what has happened this year, and that was with players like Sandi, Johnno, Luke, Fyfe and co fit and firing. This year his attempts to change with the times have been torpedoed by an almost unprecedented run of injury to TOP level players. Some of our young players are starting to feel the wear and tear of playing week in week out at top level and this is a big part of what has happened over the last 2 games. Most teams giving young players a start in the big league will rotate them in and out til they become accustomed to the physical battering of top level footy, but Freo haven't been able to do that this year and it is starting to tell.

Spot on Rm the best example of a young talented mid struggling early in his career is Brad Hill at the Hawks. With all his natural talent and flair it still took him two seasons to become the player he now is. Our midfield next year will have Sandilands, Fyfe, Neale and Blakely starting on the ball. Fyfe may well be Captain as I don't think Mundy is comfortable in the role, no shame in that some players are just not suited to that role. I would like to see our forward line set up with Walters, Tanner Smith and Tabs as the deep forwards and Weller, MaCarthy and Yarran as our half forwards. Bennell and Hill would be my first pick on the wings. Crozier, Collins and Johnson would play off half back and Mundy, A Pearce and Spurr would be at full back. Play, Griff or Apeness as second ruck, with Barlow, D Pearce and any of Langdon, Morabito, Grey, etc coming off the bench. I would back that team to make the finals.

Okay, all these opinions and ideas have got me back up after a disappointing weekend.

For us to make the finals, who do you see as dropping out next year from this year's finalists. And yes I know who we ALL want to go.

The problem I have is the fact that most of us seem to be viewing Fremantle's chances in isolatation to our own players. You think that the Bulldogs and GWS won't go further past us next year? Adelaide? Geelong? Even with a soft draw we will be middle of the road at best. Look at the form from the middle of 2015 onwards and tell me otherwise.

I just reviewed Freo's middle of 2015. From round 15 to 23 they won 5 and lost 4. Those four losses were against 3 top4 teams (HA and NM away) and Port (who we sent our B Team to play).
That was with injuries to Fyfe (and others) and Freo had a horrid run with the umpires.
Freo then beat another Top4 team in the finals, before then losing to the eventual premiers.

That is more than reasonable form for a top8 team.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

Freo's fixture for the 2016 season must be the worst in their history. Long road trips to Launceston, Darwin, (usually we have one or the other) Sydney, Brisbane and Gold Coast. After playing in the hot and humid conditions of Darwin, a 6 day break. If this is the result of being on top of the ladder for the 2015 season, then, after our poor form this year, we should look forward to a much more reasonable fixture for 2017!?

And here are the sides we beat after round 9:
Gold Coast away by 7 points
Pies at home by 7 points
Lions at home by 46 points
Carlton at home by 42 points
a lucky win we didn't deserve against the Tiges at the G, by 4 points
GWS at home by 21
St Kilda at Etihad by 37
Melbourne at home by 54.

Sydney at home by 9 in the QF.

See the problem here?

All those sides, with the exception of the Lions, and probably Gold Coast and the Tigers, are way past us for next year. I'd be surprised if we beat Richmond next year. We should win at home, possibly

Bouncing back is a relative term. To me it means just being a competitive, respectable football team. And at rd 17 being in contention to play finals.

I do believe we can achieve that next season.

WCE did it from bottom of the ladder with Jonny Chemist at the helm, so yes we can. As for teams we beat last year we had a much stronger list with more players available. Injuries to key personnel and then injury to the fringe players that would cover those players has cooked us and much earlier in the season than previously. With the young guys we have blooded, being supported by those experienced players returning and with who knows what sort of trading and draft picks we get, next year will definitely be a different kettle of fish. The return of an in form Barlow boosted our midfield ability no end this season, to think that adding Fyfe and Bennel into that mix will have no effect is ludicrous. We need a replacement for Sandi in the next two seasons but are positioned to pick up a senior as well as a Junior ruckman (English maybe) at the end of this year. Apeness is still pretty young and could be really good for us in the middle. I think there is more cause for optimism than pessimism regarding Freos next season. We still have Ubergang to get a chance as a tall defender as well as Ryan Nihaus. If these guys work out then Sam Collins may get switched forward as he plays that posi as well as he plays down back. If there is any any area we need to improve it is the strength and conditioning team. Get rid of all these soft tissue injuries, they are crippling our team.

I have read through the posts and come to the following conclusions. You need luck and a decent team to finish top 4 and be in contention. Luck can be the bounce of a ball or an untimely injury. We had a fair bit of luck last year (maybe not entirely with injuries it must be said). This year we have had none.

On the decent team side of the agenda. I think we need the re-build that is coming. Our list is a bit old for where it is at on the ladder and it is unbalanced. On the plus side I don’t think this is a tear it all down 2008-9 rebuild. I think we have a good young core to build from this time. A core that has tasted success and will allow younger players to grow quickly.

However, we need to be smart about our rebuild. Having a core of good players means we need to re-build efficiently and with a bit of pace. Fyfe is going to be past his prime in 4 years so we can only take 1-2 drafts to do it.
I think the strategy should be draft driven. One I think that we haven’t been successful in the FA market but also I think we can pick up decent young talls anywhere in the draft. We just need to pick them. Pearce and Collins are a prime example. I hate the idea of coveting up and coming young talls from other teams. You invariably over pay.
The only exception here should be McCarthy. He is a young but played AFL and I think he is a known quantity. Also we can get him for value. If GWS don’t play ball, then he can play WAFL next year and we’ll get him for free the year after. We need to be ruthless.

Because we are building though the draft we need more picks. We should be going through the list and trying to unload some younger players who are surplus to a balanced team. We also need to say good bye to some favourites. I also think we need to clear some space by cutting some players loose. Clarke is obvious, so is Griffin in my opinion. But Ballantyne and Mayne should also be looked at really carefully. There will be more.

We need to stockpile as many second, third and fourth round picks we can. With the new academy selection system we can trade with GWS, Syd etc to trade those lower picks up in the draft. Maybe we could also get a second first round pick. One thing I don’t want to see is us using the picking a valuable injured player again. It has hurt us this year not having Balic and Yarran playing to at least see if they are worth anything.

I expect in Oct and Nov there will be a number of posters complaining about trades we’ve made. Some fan favourites may go (Broughton anyone?). I have as little faith in the list management team as everyone else. But I am an enthusiastic amateur at best and we do still seem to be able to unearth decent players later in the draft (Neale, Collins etc). But we just have to have faith and if in 2 years we still suck and haven’t risen to competing for finals spots then they need to go.

So are we going to bounce back next year. Sure we could make finals next year with a bit of luck. But I won’t be unhappy if we don’t but feel we have made the right moves.

To answer Agarn's question, North Melbourne are older than we are and have already started dropping off. It's like watching Freo 2015 only we ended up one win away from the Grand Final.

Harvey & Petrie want to go around again? Be my guest. They will be bottom 4 in 2017.

sydney are flying with a mix of old and young players and they remind me a bit of how freo were 2 years ago....their attack on the ball and player is relentless....i gather the return of brett kirk from freo could be a factor in their mode of play and also our style reversal?
