TOPIC: Ruckman

I am starting to think its more a priority than a key forward.

The problem being they take 6 years to come on.

Our 1st round pick this year next year's second round pick and a late pick for Lobb and McCarthy. That works doesnt it?

It doesn't. Not when Lobb is contracted til the end of 2017

Players can be traded within contract.....we would actually pay Lobb a lot more than he would be getting next year anyway..I know he is keen to come home too....

How long until Tim English plays quality AFL footy??

English and Strnadica are years away.

I dont know what GWS' ruck stocks are like and to Drubbings point they wont want to give him up but hey we are offering pick 3 here.

I think it would be a great trade for both clubs....well us anyway.

Where this falls down is it's you that is offering the picks, not the club.

Lobb would be a great pick up, he looks a bonafide forward and can ruck at that size if need be.

Well lets hope they do something constructive with their picks. People keep saying Sandilands will come back and everything is going to be ok. Sandilands is two years younger than Pavlich.

Ruckman take six years from drafting to prime. Our list management model should have spat out a requirement to draft a ruckman three years ago.

Must have been a cell reference error in the spreadsheet formula.

But isn't that why we drafted Hendrix and Hannath? It's just our misfortune that both of them, well, suck...

There's Apeness too, but until I see him string more than 2 games in a row without breaking down, I'm not optimistic that he's the answer as well..

Think our biggest problem is that we have been so spoilt to have Sandi hitting it down the throats of our mids for years that we have not yet been able to adapt without him...any chance that we can start developing mids to read opposing ruckmans taps? Teams have been doing that against us for years, why can't we do the same?

I would have thought its been evident for at least two seasons now that Clarke was not capable of leading the ruck.

There's been talk in the last two or three trade periods of Clarke being traded but nothing eventuates either because we think he's finally going to produce something useful or other clubs don't rate/want him. The second option would be even more true after this year.

Clarke has had his knees taped up for years. He's probably been playing with niggling injuries that have held him back. We've played him because he's fit enough to, and we've had no one else. No one will take him on.

As for Lobb, GWS would trade him to Hawthorn for a few magic beans, rather than do a deal with Freo...

Definitely agree we need to start prioritising some ruck talent. I still say Witts is the most gettable and is the second tallest bona fide ruckman in the AFL at the moment. I haven't yet given fully up on Clarke in the hope it's just been his body that's either shaken his confidence or not allowed him to compete at his best. He's more an athletic type, so fitness issues can have a bigger impact than most, especially pre-25 (the musculoskeletal system doesn't fully mature til around 24 years old or so) . But it's been a while since he's fully hit his straps, so I'm not sure we can afford not to have some other irons in the fire.

Apeness is a ruck isn't he? If I remember he was playing as a ruck and only starting playing forward in the U18's when Tom Boyd got injured.. We could just start grooming him for a ruck role rather than the key forward thing.. He certainly is aggressive enough.

I agree. Cut or trade Hannath and Clarke. Keep Griffin for another season then cut him loose. Apeness should be focused on as a ruckman come forward to learn his craft. Draft another ruck or two.

The funny thing about Zac Clarke is that he played his best footy as a free running player around the wings under Harvey and Ross can't seem to work out how to play him. His best performances now seem to be when he rucks solo as with Peel or before we added Hannath to the mix for the Collingwood game. He cannot ruck in tandem or play any long periods in the forward line so if Sandi is going to hang around for the next one or two seasons Zac may have to move on to a club that will give the number 1 spot.
