TOPIC: Bond. 017. Rainmaker.

RideoftheVagaries Bond. 017. Rainmaker. 7 years 9 months ago #1

So now we seem to have been committed to retaining Bond for the next few years at least, I reckon as part of this review thingy they should also look at what they could do to boost our chances of attracting the best talent available. Myself, I’d create a position in the recruitment department for a rainmaker. Now. Their sole duty and KPI being to get successful trade deals done. They could sound out and plant seeds with those on the more wishy part of the wish-list and ease the transition for those more likely to wear purple.

They could be the highest paid person in the footy department for the next few years at least, mostly based on an incentive based salary. They’d also have to have a fair bit of clout. Hiring the right person is key. It’d have to be someone who believes in Freo, has a great sales technique with masterful negotiating skills, but can be trusted to be not overly impulsive. I think Chris Connelly ticks a couple of those boxes, but probably not the last. Even if they weren’t an in-system footy person, that’d be more than fine.

Besides the usual suspects on the shortlist, they could also start with having a shot at Witts from Collingwood. He’s out of contract at the end of this year and is struggling at the moment to get a go at Collingwood with Grundy there, plus they’ve got the American mutant showing something now too. He’s from NSW and turned down the option of being part of the deal that got Treloar to Collingwood from GWS. He’s right behind Sandilands (and the American mutant) as the tallest ruckman going around, and has showed a lot of athleticism and heart when given a run at it. So, with a deft touch (rainmaker) in charge of the chase, he’d be worth pursuing. Hard.

I like your rainmaker plan ROTV except for the targeting of Witts. I see him as a plodding big guy who doesn't do much and I think we've already got our fair quota of them.

The rainmaker is more key than Witts. But it'd be nice to have a 209 to replace 211 when he goes.

Lyon and Connolly at Fremantle would be like putting a Cat and a Dog in a sack. And then dropping it into Freo harbour.

But the suggestion has merit. Much more that Witts, sorry.

If we are replacing Bond why not replace him with Peter Bell. He is a lawyer, a past
president of the AFL Players Association, a past Freo captain, a premiership player, he is liked and respected in the eastern states and is a legend in the AFL hall of fame. What better qualifications could be brought to the table for that position?

The idea is not to replace Bond, mainly because they seem to have committed to keeping him for the next few years anyways. The idea is to bring someone in who can get some deals done, even the ones that seem too hard. Bond can continue to look after all the other stuff he does now. My impression of Peter Bell is that he wouldn't be lateral enough to have what it takes for that sort of role.

As for Witts, I get it's a little hard to see now, but give him a few years development and a #1 ruck role and I reckon he'll be a monster. Hopefully a good one.

I think a prerequisite to be list manager is you should actually give a stuff about the club. Not sure Bond has that qualification either.

The reasons behind suggesting P Bell are as follows:
I) Lawyers tend to be articulate, skilled negotiators, with strong communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills. These traits would be extremely helpful during say contract negotiations, trade deals for new recuits and contract extension negotiations.
II ) Having held a senior AFL position, been a AFL premiership player in a VFL side and being a hall of famer, means he is a part of the establishment in Victorian AFL circles. This opens doors and gives him access to the administration at clubs which is also handy when trying to recruit players from these clubs.
III ) He is liked and respected on the East coast which makes negotiating with other clubs that much easier. Who would you rather deal with someone like that or an abrasive knobber who wants the world but is unwilling to give anything for it and now carries that reputation.
IV) Bell has been in the AFL system most of his life including as previously mentioned, being part of successful premiership teams and holding a senior post in the AFL . He is no dummy , is a Freo personality, knows what a premiership winning team looks like and could not be any worse than what most people think Bond is.
Even if you just used him in a recruiting role I think he would be very good.

Purple, I have to take issue with i.

In my experience, lawyers are exceptionally skilled at protracting negotiations based on inconsequential details and increasing their own fees.

That is different to the requirement to be able to come to a rapid conclusion and result.

although he is a qualified lawyer, I cant recall when he has had the experience of being this articulate well spoken negotiating lawyer you speak of.
As far as I can recall, he has been a AFL player, Board Member, Property Developer and now radio jock.
Prob never set foot in a court or a negotiating room....

Im not sure what it is about Belly (I think the doubts started with his lap of honour) but he just doesnt seem to love the club like a normal past player does..

Bell was a big driver in destroying all the things that made us Freo. He never seemed to love the club and I can't see him being a good fit for such a role.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Bpurple, I agree that lawyers tend to be articulate, skilled negotiators, with strong communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills. I would also add that they are funny, ruggedly handsome, and frequently rescuing kittens from trees.

I'm not sure if Bell ever practised law, but he strikes me as someone who considers himself smarter than he actually is, which is probably a more realistic trait of many lawyers (myself included) that would not bode well in a football operations role.
