TOPIC: Simpson

Simpson's played just 25 WAFL League games.
He averages just under 16 disposals a game.
In his 11 games so far in 2016 he has been named in EF's best only once in Round 6 (named 2nd best).
In those 11 games, he has kicked 9 goals (Brett Peake has kicked 23 in those same games).
Meanwhile, Freo has the likes of Ed Langdon, a couple of years younger than Simpson, playing in the Magoos, averaging 22+ disposals a game, kicked 5 goals a couple of weeks ago, and is not good enough to get a start in Freo's current best 22.

I for one are very comfortable with Simpson not being in Freo's squad.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

Allowances were made for Ablett and co before they became star players, but that is different because the media put a spin on their story. There are a lot of players who would have been AFL regulars if they got the same "considerations" the privileged few have received. Simpson is not the only one. It is an example of how the AFL and media have 2 sets of rules, and pick and choose who will be the chosen ones.

Why do I get the feeling that if Simpson played for Hawthorn and was delisted in precisely the same circumstances that occurred at Freo it would be seen as consistent with Hawthorn/Clarko's requirement to buy in to the team ethos etc.... but because it happened at Freo it's seen by some to be harsh and unjust treatment of a boy from the bush?

I don't agree Flag, Hawthorn have shown through Mitchell, Hodge and co that they don't exactly lead in the high moral ground stakes. Most Freo supporters have a dislike of the treatment dished out to our young indigenous players when they are placed in the completely foreign environment of a big city club, no support for them when the inevitable homesickness sets in.

I agree Flag Dayle Garlett is prime example giv n very short shrift at Hawthorn, unfortunately this has turned out poorly for him. Admittedly without being at the club and not knowing, he may have had more or less issues than Simpsons. We will never know, although you could say there is evidence to suggest he had more issues.
I don't think this debate is about moral attributes in so much as the ability to abide by by a set of team standards. In this instance I would say that Hodge and Mitchell would have an abundance of this, and hence they are adored by their club and supporters.

It seems Simpson is far too high maintenance for even a WAFL club to be able to get a few games out of.

This is hardly the fault of the clubs. There's no guarantee that even with infinite resources and special treatment, you'd keep this bloke on your list. Only a month ago, he had a puff piece about him maturing and loving his footy at E Freo.

Sadly this is a guy with huge potential who cannot psychologically adapt to the rigors (selfless team discipline) of professional football. It would seem this potential will never be realized. Unfortunately we have to move on as they say in the literature.

The point of discipline is to get the best performance out of someone. It's a means not an end.

Wiley made the same mistake Lyon made. They both got frustrated, went too hard and lost the bloke. It was a lack of judgement or discipline at a management level.

Whether you think he is worth the trouble or not worth the trouble is missing the point. They did think he was worth the trouble. They were attempting to do something and failed at it because they made the wrong call.

Everyone loses here.

So many young kids have the talent to make it at the next level. The reason so many don't go on to the next level, is talent is one small part of the equation. Why do you think all those kids running around that everybody says will definitely play AFL don't. Because what is probably more important is consistent and continual hard work, and application even when the rewards are not imediately granted.

Talent is 80% of the equation.

Gary ablett snr would not have had a career today. Does that make sense?

Couldn't this simply be a matter of the guy having a tonne of natural talent so everyone thinks he should be in through time. Bug the big time is incredibly demanding and had doesn't think it is worth the effort. It's not that big a deal. If his doesn't want to play in the AFL or the WAFL it's ok. He gave it a shot and he's not willing to make the sacrifices that are required. No dramas. I don't see bodies in the street.

I'm hoping he makes it to the Black Ducks (as they know what to do with special talent) - look at how Mikey got it together after Freo told him to #$ss off.
