TOPIC: Buck's interview

Worth putting up with Hackdorn to hear this. Wish Bucks was our list manager. Amidst other worthwhile comments said how he looks forward 3-5yrs for their future needs and doesn't just pick all midfielders even if they are the best available as don't want an unbalanced side unless they can see a future trade in it for someone they want. No wonder Hawks still up there much as I might dislike them.

He was okay, but worth putting up with Hack for? Don't think so.

Free beers and pies for a year wouldn't be worth it if you had to put up with hackdorn for even 5 minutes.

Not sure what happened to my 'Hackdorn' new topic earlier so will repeat some of what I heard while waiting for Bucks.

He started out by stating he'd said Neale was staying until brought to task by a caller - he quickly backtracked saying Neale was going but couldn't get what he wanted so re-signed. Ha
Later stated Langden wanted out (from another reliable source)
And we should get rid of at least 14 of our players.

Not holding my breath on outcomes. Won't be listening again.

You must have heard that bit in the interview where Gary Buckenara was quite articulate in explaining how he had a point of difference in strategy from clubs who always took the best available player with their picks.

He was emphasising the need to always have a balanced list in the present as well as looking ahead to 3-4 years time - so Bob Maumill goes 'but' like he's raising a pertinent new point, then asks Bucky a question about what happens if you always take the best available player and you end up with four full backs or a team full of midfielders.

He doesn't even pretend to listen to anyone other than himself now that senility has set in - which is probably why Hagdorn can spout so much rubbish on his show. Maumill even seems oblivious to some anti-union ads running during his show.

There was about a 50 minute interview that Gary Buckenara did last year on the AFL website section called Road To The Draft where he talked about some of the smoke and mirrors strategy they used in convincing Richmond that Hawthorn were going to take Tambling with their 1st or 2nd pick, as well as offering up his top ten for last year's draft. (Episode 17 Audio should still be there along with more recent episodes about the upcoming 2016 draft). For those interested in his opinion, he had Darcy Tucker at no 7.

Bucky had somewhat of a falling out with Clarkson. Felt he wasn't getting the roles and responsibilities he should be from a person of his experience. Clarkson wanted to give more of his jobs to youngers staff.
Consequently he's now out of Hawthorn and in Ballarat. I guess he still is, as he was at the start of the season.

Hey Chewy, cut Bob some slack, willya. The poor bugger's 78 years old and he's earned enough brownie points sticking up for working stiffs and Freo to see him out.

I agree he's letting the Hag get away with way too much, but sometimes you can still hear the contempt coming through.

Yes Corporal, Bucky was talking as the former Hawthorn recruiter - but he did say in the interview I'm referring to that he was hoping to continue similar work with if another AFL were interested in having him, but I suppose nobody was at the time, which was before he took the North Ballarat coaching job.

I'd seen him on more than one occasion on the ABC TV WAFL coverage when the camera panned out to him sitting out on the grass banks with a thermos by his chair and a file full of notes. Not every player he picked was a winner - I know he mentioned some first round key position players like Beau Dowler and Mitch Thorp that didn't make good. He thought Ben Stratton was the pick he was most satisfied with selecting because he had to convince the club that he was worth picking despite his skill set at the time not being to Clarkson's requirements.

Sorry Zorro, I was being a bit harsh about the senility thing with Bob. Its probably because I recognize the same symptoms occurring. I imagine he'll cop a lot of flack from his old union mates for letting those ads run during his show - (actually I only heard one - and only listened for about half an hour).

Looking 3 to 5 years ahead when drafting is pretty much a no brainer but there's a chicken and egg question. If the team is going well and you're picking young guys they will take a couple of years to make the firsts unless they are exceptional players. This is where any team wants to be.

OTOH if you're bleeding you're likely to be tempted by a quicker fix with a mature age player, a discard, or a trade.

Like all things to do with football, it's about talent and execution. If you're don't have the ability then you're not going to be able to execute the list management strategy well, no matter how good the strategy may be.

Looking to 3-5 years ahead, having a balanced list and not always just drafting the best player available if you already have enough of that type of player.
How's that for radical thinking! Imagine if Bond and Co could wrap their heads around such a weird plan?
