Please explain how they are going to get Hogan and Lobb. We can't afford Hogan, and Lobb is contracted until the end of 2017.

At the mid point of this 2016 season Neale is

No 1 in the competition for total disposals and disposal average per game
No 1 in the competition for total effective disposals and effective disposal average per game
No 1 in the competition for total contested possessions (3rd average contested possession per game)
No 2 player in the competition (behind Selwood) for total clearances (that's without the help of Sandilands).

At 23yo - you would think that he's still on the upward curve in terms of getting better over the next 3 years.

Edit: In regards to the context of the next post, Lachie Neale was in the Top 10 in the competition for all these stats in 2015 when we were 17-5.

I won't say anything more about Tabs - there are enough people on the internet writing negative things about their own players - but I don't think he reads the ball in flight very well, and he doesn't have much pace off the mark. If you're going to be an elite key forward, I think you need one of those attributes.

Can he be an effective second forward? I hope so. I think he's just a shade off that but our complete absence of a second key forward has probably lowered expectations about how talented a good team's second forwards are.

Here's the List of 'Second Key Forwards' in the Top 8 teams:

Hawthorn: Gunston
Sydney: Tippett
Geelong: Kersten / Stanley
GWS: Patton / Lobb
North: Waite / Brown
Adelaide: Jenkins
Bulldogs: Boyd
West Coast: Darling

Of those, I Can't see Tabs eeking out a better career than many of those guys. Maybe Kersten.

At the moment, he's 23, still has some upside, but as a stay-at-home forward hits the scoreboard less than Chris Mayne (without the tackles). Take away the game against a non-competitive Brisbane, and he has 9 goals from 11 games. He's got a fair way to go.

If Bond can cop the flak for the lack of KPP coming through the system then he should be given credit for our record in retention as well.
Maybe our ability to retain players has also impinged on our ability to trade in players in from the outside. It appears that the club has chosen to demonstrate loyalty to players on the list. Maybe we could have put some people on the trade table whilst they had inflated value, even if they would have prefferred to stay on our list.
I have put the view previously that Neale could have been a valuable trade chip as I am of the opinion that all options should be considered, however I am very happy that he has decided to stay.

What is the logic of that? We should just cut him some slack on one thing because people bag him on the other?

Arguably, retention has got better because of where Freo are at in the comp. Not how you were recruited and managed. Unsurprisingly, players that rate themselves, that don't get played usually want to go somewhere else. Unless they know they got bugger all worth in the market. We got a few of those.

I think the coaching roster, who actually have day to day contact with the players would have the greater impact on player retention than the recruiting roster. Particularly when you consider that 50% of the recruiters are based in Melbourne.

There is some significant fudging of reality going on here in the effort to make Bond and Co look better than they are. Desperate times it would seem.

Getting back to Tabs, I've noticed that when Pav is playing, the forward 50 entries are very Pav centric, which may explain why Tabs goal kicking is down when Pav is playing and why is suddenly jumps up when Pav doesn't play. Also, considering the very poor service we have been getting via our midfield for most of this year, getting 14 goals from 12 games isn't that bad. He has 14G 5B) Pav has 20G 19B, so Tabs has made better use of his more limited opportunities.

I'd question this insistence that he doesn't read the flight of the ball very well when his contested marking would clearly indicate otherwise.

For a young bloke getting his first run of consecutive games, he's actually developing very nicely and would likely have better numbers if our midfield was a bit more competitive.

Edit:

Contested marks for Freo so far this year...best is Tabs with 25 from 12 games. Next is Pav with 16 from 12 games. Suggesting he is poor at reading the ball in flight doesn't survive critical examination. Tabs is much better than some people would have you believe

You also need some context around comparing Taberner to those other forwards, as most of them are vastly more experienced and play in currently very successful teams, which mean you will score more. Below is a (bit of a messy) table showing the games experience and inside 50 count for the teams this year. I've only added the goals by game count for those in Taberner's comparative experience level:

Hawthorn:____Gunston___111 games____-2016- (785 i50s)
Sydney: ______Tippett____162 games____-2016- (757 i50s)
Geelong:______Kersten____20 games____-2016- (800 i50s)____21 goals/13 games
______________Stanley____73 games____-2016- (800 i50s)_____8 goals/12 games
GWS:_________Patton_____43 games____-2016- (798 i50s)____13 goals/13 games
______________Lobb______12 games____ -2016- (798 i50s)____18 goals/14 games
North:________ Waite____216 games_____-2016- (747 i50s)
______________Brown_____38 games ____-2016- (747 i50s)____23 goals/14 games
Adelaide:_____Jenkins_____81 games____-2016- (737 i50s)
Bulldogs:_____Boyd_______27 games____-2016- (722 i50s)_____5 goals/4 games
West Coast:__Darling_____118 games____-2016- (707 i50s)

Freo:________Taberner_____39 games____-2016- (663 i50s)____14 goals/12 games

Yes yeti, agree with all that, also he has plenty of team spirit. He is often the first one in to look after teammates being given the "unsociable" treatment that so many of our leading players have to put up with, and he does show a bit of mongrel when tackling and bumping those unsociable players. As he fills out that will start to put some hesitation in the minds of opponents with "unsocialist" tendencies.
