TOPIC: Neale Re-signs

That's one interpretation Shane. I think Neale's signing is instructive. Here's a young bloke who was plucked from the other side of the country by Bond and his team at pick 58, was given great opportunities to develop as a young player (including being put on the ball at the expense of veterans like Mickey B), he's turned into an elite player, a fringe all-Australian, and probably a top 3 player from his draft, and until this year, has played finals every year of his career. The team has dropped off this year, but he obviously rates the club, and presumably believes Freo can turn it around over those three years. Had he not, he would have at least spoken to other clubs.

But, by all means, feel free to speculate how this demonstrates once again that no-one at the club is competent. But if that's the case, add Neale's manager to the list.

Well Morgan, I guess that Neale signing up again is proof that Bond is all knowing and all wise.

Not sure how it does anything to actually address the core criticisms that were levelled regarding our lack of depth in key position talls but like all good lawyers, you can point to a bear and ignore the facts.

How about you tell us again what crab Taberner is.

Yeah its great that Lachie has signed up again but we still have to use Dawson because we have no viable alternatives. We still have no viable forward to replace Pav. I consider us very fortunate to have found something in Pearce A and Collins but we are still deficient forward and back and have no viable replacement for Sandi.

You know the old saying, one swallow doesn't make a summer

So when a Brisbane player re-signs it will mean all those things too Morgan?

A player resigning isn't validation the list manager and others are doing their job well.

Ladder position is a far better indicator of that.

Its instructive of very little you allude to other than him being an excellent pick at 58 and a loyal kid.

Now getting back to the absolute horse's arse that is our current playing list......

I'm not sure how saying a manager did a good job is implying incompetence. Neale has been playing footy a couple of levels above our next best while the team is going horribly and his contract was being negotiated.

He got a very good deal.

I just think his re-signing is a good news story and making up hypothetical scenarios by which Freo were fleeced seems churlish. Our talent retention during Chris Bond's tenure has been outstanding. Credit where it's due.

I also just think that Lachie is a counter-example to some criticisms levelled against the club: that our drafting frolics to the Eastern seaboard are futile, that picking midfielders has been to our detriment, that young players aren't given opportunities.

And yeti, for what it's worth, I never said Tabs was a crab, and have always thought he could, at best, be in a premiership best 22, but only as a fringe player, and not as an elite one. I still think that's the case, but hope to be proven wrong.

If he didn't get a good deal then he's a chump and his manager is a chump.

I don't know who is manager is but I can't agree with you're opinion that Lachie Neale is a chump. It's churlish of you to suggest so, just to make another laboured effort to express your infatuation for Chris Bond.

I happen to think that in negotiations it's possible for both parties to reach a mutually satisfactory outcome. That seems to have happened a bit at Freo.

You think Freo were torched by Neale's manager based on.......?

Based on the assumption fanatical Bondians wouldn't take a light hearted comment about a by the number press release and kick up an impassioned arguement about it.

Shows what I know.

I don't think Bond and talent retention are related ideas.

He picks young blokes. His form there is patchy at best. If young blokes who can play decide to stay, it's not because of Bond, it's because they see a good future at the club. And they are offered a good deal.

Well Morgan, let me quote your opinion on Tabs from quite recently:

I'd support giving Tabs an extended run if he'd ever shown an attribute you could imagine being used as a weapon. He's slow on a lead, can't read the ball in flight, has average hands, shows poor second efforts, has no mongrel, doesn't readily tackle and isn't good by hand on foot. He's mobile for a big man, with good endurance, but doesn't really find much space. Perhaps he / the team could improve on that aspect, but it's not much to hang your hat on.

Its in line with comments you've made at other times

Do you disagree with any of that?

Tabs is tall, can run, and isn't too uncoordinated. That's good enough to be starting 22 in a lot of teams. I don't think it's good enough to be a primary option or guarantee you a spot if your form is bad.

He's basically the Zac Dawson of the forward line. He should get a game until we can find someone better.

I disagree with all of that. Every. Last Bit.

As I've posted on numerous occasions, Tabs will be a very good forward assuming the mismanagement of his early career doesn't continue.

He reads the ball well, can take a strong pack mark and can kick accurately over long distances. The constant stream of play one week and get dropped for another 4 or 5 contributes nothing towards his development as a player.

I advocated leaving him in long enough to develop and when that occurred, oddly enough, he developed. We still need a replacement for Pav, we don't have that but Tabs is going to be a long term 2nd tall for us and will give a great service over many years.

I was wrong about Taberner. Given consistent game time, he's made significant improvement, if it continues, he could be very handy. He might only ever be a good 2nd up tall forward, but it's better than not having one.

Looking to our 2017 and beyond team, our spine looks like this:
FB : A. Pearce
CHB: Johnson
Centre: Fyfe
CHF: C. McCarthy
FF: J. Hogan/R.Lobb
Ruck: Sandi

Then you build your team around that. Doubt our recruiting team at your peril.
