TOPIC: Adams vs Collins

There is many of us who decried our incompetence by drafting Collins ahead of Marcus Adams based on Adams' form at the start of the season, but based on what we all have witnessed over the past few weeks, think we are definitely on a winner with Collins...dare I say it, Bondy (or whoever) may have got it right with him...

Side note - once A Pearce and Johnno overcomes their injuries, how exactly is our backline going to be structured next year? Assuming Spack stays in as Roly's lovechild, who stays and who misses out? Also, is Ibbo done with us, or can we find a new role for him?

Sam Collins looks to be a very good pick, that's for sure. But we didn't pick him ahead of Marcus Adams (who also looks likely to become an excellent player); the Bulldogs took Adams with 35, and we took Collins with 55. I suspect we may have had our eye on Adams with 55.

The larger issue is that we should have both of them: Adams was available, and overlooked completely, the year before. It seems that there were some extenuating circumstances behind Adams' non-selection, but to me a big guy, from your own state, who took some time out from footy before getting back into it with gusto, seems to be exactly what the rookie list is for.

Another way to look at the whole situation (that is, where two likely-looking, solid tall backs have been overlooked by every club for a couple of entire drafts before being recruited and showing the whole talent-identification process up as a bit.of a farce) is to say that drafting, for all of the bulldust that goes with it and all of the people paid to assess junior talent and so forth, is pretty difficult. Or, if you prefer, not done very well.

Right you are, Mike, should have done my research properly before posting the thread! With that in mind, surely it would've been unrealistic for us to expect Bondy to pick up Adams with our first pick at 27 in the 2015 draft...but like you said, drafting seems to be an inexact science...

Adams was a very unique talent that played all his junior footy as a midfielder.
He didnt grow until late and really built up when he left the game after his brothers accident.
As such he is now a KPP with midfielder skills.
Dare I say it, but if our recruiting was based in WA and had a WA focus as they say - he should have been rookied the year prior after his first year at WP.
As much as I rated him, I cant say I would have taken him with our first pick (Darcy Tucker) last year with the assumption he would have been available with our second or third pick..
He is a true utility and will be a asset to the bulldogs for ten years.
We have a great player in Collins but Adams certainly has him for skill and flexibility

I posted something similar in the last bondy thread when we were playing carp footy and we were questioning our drafting.

Darcy Tucker was touted as a potential top 10-20 pick at one stage but slid to us at 27. You could mount a case for us to say that for darcy tucker, we paid unders. Balic is another one with our second selection, touted as top 20 and really slide to barely make it top 40. A wrist injury doesnt help, but I'm sure we will find out sooner a later. If he comes good, another quality midfield type we have paid unders for, if not then yeh this one might sting a little bit. But that pick is all relative to who was picked around him.

So then the comparison comes up of Adams v Collins and on the small data collins is certainly holding his own. Would picking Adams at 27 just ahead of 35 have been considered unders or overs? Possibly overs given his age. I think given who and where we have selected them, we have done pretty good so far. Next step is to see Yarran in the big stage once he is fit.

So you are saying Demo, we should have drafted him as a midfielder? THAT would have gone down well with Dockerlanders!!!

No, not at all....but we did draft David Mundy as a full back and that turned out ok

Yeah coz we turned him into a midfielder. Trying to do the opposite is a different kettle of fish. Look how hard it has been to convert Fyfe.

Quiexo's question RE: Ibbo is interesting. He makes a good intercept mark so would he work well as a marking forward? Have we tried this before?

Not trying to do anything opposite. Adams has played as a KPP for the last three years.
The fact he was a midfielder when he was younger is a bonus and a explanation as to why his skills are so good..

Fyfe was a Full Forward - as far as I can see, he can do anything we need him to - so whats your point?

As disastrous as we were tonight, Collins once again proved what a great pickup he is...with him and AA Pearce, that's our key backs sorted for the next 10 years...

Agree Quiexo but with our injury history a couple of competent back ups would be good. Also times when you need a third tall. Unless The Big D plays on for a few more years of course.

Tanner Smith was recruited as a back, wasn't he? And played back at peel until this season. Has shown some promise.
