I think Jooter is on the money. The 'banter' was one thing - who would push who down the slide, etc. But it is entirely another thing to add the 'holding under the water' or 'don't come up' bits ... they took the interchange beyond banter to 'inappropriate'.
I fully support the moves on reducing and calling out domestic violence, but this episode had the effect of denigrating Caroline Wilson and leaving it out in the public arena. Eddie, supported by the others, chose a soft target and deserves to be condemned for it. Despite all the bleating half-apologies we've heard from him over time, he still doesn't get it. He needs to be much more careful about the power he exerts in the public domain.
I think the AFL was super-soft on him, probably for the reasons outlined by Caroline Wilson - everyone is scared of him.

To your face it's banter, behind your back it's slander.

In my humble opinion.

Compare all that with this story. People making the news for the right reasons.

Courtney deserves every success that comes her way, and the media should be focusing on such an inspiration for everyone who believes in sport being a positive influence on the lives of young people. She is making the right choices in life and in sport despite all she has been through.

Good on you and all the best for the future.

Eddie is a knobber, so he says knob things, but I don't believe he was a racist when he chose poor words about Goodes and again I don't believe he was advocating violence against women with his comments about Caro ... he was just being an insensitive Eddie knob. Comments of holding Caro under the water in an ice bath charity event tells me more about Eddie's negative attitude towards Caro as a hard hitting football journo rather than any images of violence towards women. I accept Eddie should be criticised for his lack of sensitivity but accusations of racism and female violence wreaks of political correctness overload for my liking.

In any case, I really like seeing females involved in AFL and recent efforts with female umpires, coaches and now players only makes the game richer. I think most of us agree with that, just like most of us agree Eddie's a knobber.

How good would it be if our players wore a white-ribbon for warm up?

Shane, how 'bout a campaign? Just emailed a friend at the club but he is on long service leave.

Hopefully this kerfuffle will mean that Freo will get more free kicks than Collingwood on Friday night. The best way to upset Eddie is for the Dockers to win. That will give Ed another black eye - metaphorically speaking of course.

I understand the point about not accepting comments about casual violence - and listening to his offensive comments it was pretty clear that Eddie was the leader of a gang that was specifically targetting Caroline Wilson - and her point last night was that nobody, regardless of gender should be subjected to those kind of comments.

Perhaps I shouldn't mix these points up, but a grey area for me is that the casual viewing of football also exposes us to physical and verbal bullying and intimidation as witnessed by the beginning of the North Melbourne vs Hawthorn game last Friday - albeit in a controlled envoironment with umpires and rules - which makes the contest appealing - and a bit repulsive too - and even if we think its still the best game in the world - enjoyed by both genders - it can often be, like Eddie, just a lot of macho bulldust.

I imagine Eddy was upset because Caro was giving him stick about the running of the Pies. But if that is the case, address it head on. Tell us he doesn't agree with her, and why.

Now if someone wants to trawl back through Dockerland and find out what sort of things we recommended be done to Patrick Smith, it might make interesting reading.

I can't imagine Ed being able to put forth a well constructed, valid arguenent against Caro.

Don't think he's anywhere near her on an intelligence level.

Interestingly in all this Deputy leader of the Liberal Party Julie Bishop commented that it was a storm in a teacup. And in this I fully agree with the Honourable Ms Bishop!

Effectively, we need to stop commenting about all and everything for fear of upsetting someone in the backreaches of the country! The reality is these guys cant stand Caro and I'm with them, she is and has always been a snarly *****and i turn off any show she is on.

If we cant have our aussie larrikin humour we may as well hop in the coffin now!

Get tougher skins and to insinuate that these comments lead to abuse of anyone is drawing a convenient long straw. Dont get me wrong I cant stand Eddie either, but i defend his right to free speech even though we dont have an inalienable right to it under our constitution.

Free speech is a furphy. There's no such thing outside of a few countries that have enshrined it in Law.

What we do have here in Australia is legislation regarding abuse and intimidation. Excusing breaches of that simple principle along the lines of humour and larrikinism is well wide of the mark. Rationalising poor behaviour is what encourages more of the same.

That's why I think it's important that a stand against this latest and any other incident of a similar vein is taken, and taken strongly. I'm in the camp that thinks political correctness can be taken too far at times by some parties... but underlying that overused term is the simple principle of respect to others.

Eddie has simply abused his position as the head of a large and very public organisation and in doing so, he's dragged a few like minded simple buffoons along for the ride, damaging the image and reputation of the parent organisation, the AFl in the process. The AFL have managed to add to the damage by effectively condoning the behaviour through accepting a p*ssweak apology.

Doesn't matter that it's Caro... it could be anyone targetted. As Jooter said earlier, I think it was... this could be your daughter, your mother or your wife / girlfriend. It's a very simple thing to try and imagine how you would feel if one of your own were on the receiving end of knuckle dragging loutishness like this and if it still feels ok to you then I venture to suggest you have some issues.
