1st pick. You do understand the entire football department got sacked, they were penalised draft picks, fined 1 million dollars and had 12 players suspended for a year.

Essendon have paid for this, do people want first borns sacrificed or something.

I get your point Hypen, but there is a part of me that thinks the 1st or 2nd pick will be a pretty handy pick up for a team that was in the 8 before they were penalised. The discontent I think is, are they genuinely the worst team in the competition?
I will say again though, the real story is around why the high profile players haven't moved to other clubs, what out of court settlements have been done and why is the media silent on this? I know personally if I had an employer treat me in this manner I would seek other employment.
Why is so difficult for sides that are clearly genuinely struggling to get a priority pick? Imagine if you were a Melbourne, Carlton or Brisbane supporter. Admittedly there are signs of improvement at both Carlton and Melbourne but there is no guarantee that this will result in top 8 finishes in the near future.
Melbourne and Carlton have both been more than amply punished for their transgressions, and yet were given no concessions despite bottoming out in the middle of compromised draft, so essentially a double dip on penalty.
The rules were set prior to the season commencing though and should stay in place. The competition doesn't benefit from having teams disadvantaged in the way Melbourne and Carlton have been.
I think Brisbane have a genuine case for a priority pick, which is well within the rules for the AFL to award.

Essendumb are supposedly going to be a much stronger team when the banned players return. If they qualify for a number one draft pick as a result of this season of punishment, but then go on to, say, qualify for finals in 2017, wouldn't that be grossly unfair to those teams like Brisbane, who are genuine basket cases and really struggling to improve?
Cheating shouldn't be rewarded, and their punishment doesn't properly end until after this season.
A fairer result at the end of this season would be that Essendumb don't receive a first round draft pick, and don't get a selection until after all the other 17 clubs have chosen once. But if they finish bottom of the ladder again in 2017, even with their best players returning to the team, then, and only then, should they receive a top draft pick.

I think a lot of posters here have forgotten the bombers now have Worstfold as coach, even with all their "star" players back they will be basket cases for several years to come. Let them have the first pick and hope they take a WA kid we can bring home in a couple of years

Great information demo, just goes to show how difficult it is to correct a basket case club. Would some of these players become better players at a better club.
In fact Some of them are already at other clubs. The draft is the mechanism that has been put in place to equalise the competition, but there is a resistance to giving priority picks. If the draft is not working to equalise the competition then other mechanisms are needed. I for one want to see all clubs and their supporters given a lick of the ice cream.

I can understand the sentiment that people don't want Effendum to benefit from a punishment (via draft picks), but the club has already been penalised in the draft. I'd say the players missing out on a year and probably taking a good part of a year to get back into the swing of things next year (i.e. three or four wasted seasons for their current cream of the crop) would probably mitigate any sort of draft benefit anyways. Plus for our own self-interests, vengeance can become like a drug, the more you have it, the more you want it, so stepping away from it isn't such a bad idea.

Sorry to rain on the hole "Essendon Admin have already been penalised parade" but they were charged by the AFL for brining the game into disrepute. They have since been found to be systemic drug cheats and WADA have brought the players to account. As stated in a press release last year WADA are awaiting the outcome of court action that Essendon and Dank are involved in before they start their investigation into the clubs admin practices at that time. No sure if the Dank court proceedings are ongoing, but under the new powers brought into being a few years ago WADA can now go after coaches and administrators deemed to have been instrumental in systemic doping. There could be more pain for Essendon to come.
