TOPIC: The two Port sides

Given the AFL are into the marketing of set piece blockbusters with a strong theme, why has it not dawned on anyone from Freo, the Power or the AFL brains trust to promote a battle of the port sides? Bill it as, I dont know" The Harbour Raiders game" and play for the "Pavlich Cup" given he is from SA and a Dockers legend. Don't tell me there is not legs in that. Both games would be well attended and it would be an incentive for people to get along and fill the new stadium.

People aren't that stupid.

You're not going to get more Fremantle supporters along, there aren't any Port Adelaide supporters to go along and no one else has any interest in either team even if they were playing for the Fireworks, Puppy dogs and Ice Cream Cup.

Exciting, aggressive football fills the stadium. Not made up trophies.

Exiting football, Shane?

Is that the kind of football that makes slime supporters go home at 3/4 time?

People, some stupid some otherwise, pack out WA derby games twice a year, even when their teams are contenders for the wooden spoon. Same same when Crows V Port, massive crowds turned out this ANZAC day at the MCG to watch two shite teams battle it out and Richmond V Essendon in the Dreamtime match this year was hardly a spectacle of hard fast aggressive footy, still got 80,000 plus there. Just an idea put it in the rejected parts bin and so be it we move on.

It turns out this week is already a week.

Fremantle Dockers Foundation Round.

Raising money to give the Fremantle administrators bigger offices and put wifi into footballers' lockers.

Dig deep. It's for a terrible cause but the kids selling stuff will get a free hat.

Bpurple I can't recall what it was called but when we played Port In the early days we played for a trophy that looked like it had a dead rat on it. Does anyone else recall this?

I was going on Saturday because I forgot to write down the website details on that big banner under the coach boxes - the one that says 'Fremantle Grand Final Packages'.

Oh, and I was hoping to see Wingard in action too.

teasea, it was called the Docklands Trophy.

DOCKLANDS TROPHY
Awarded to the winner of matches between Fremantle and Port Adelaide. This trophy was a large anchor mounted on a wooden base, and celebrated the dock-working heritage of the two cities. Like the Albert Thurgood Trophy it was first awarded for a pre-season practice match; the newly-formed Fremantle Dockers claiming the trophy with a 38 point win over the SANFL's Port Adelaide Magpies. The two teams played for the trophy again during the 1996 pre-season and, after Port Adelaide's entry to the AFL in 1997, the trophy continued to be presented for all matches between the teams (including practice matches and pre-season cup games) until at least 2002. It now resides permanently at Alberton Oval in Port Adelaide.

If you scroll down the article you'll see the original Western Derby Trophy. That was one ugly trophy. No wonder we let the Slime hold on to it for so long.
