TOPIC: Mayne

As a couple of others have said, Mayne's sole problem is the yips he acquired a few minutes after someone in the afl media wrote a story, a couple of weeks prior to the 2013 grand final, on him being the most accurate forward in the competition. If he can shake them, he's suddenly a fan favourite again.

On a related point (and picking up on Suker's post): I can't remember what his dockerland-approved nickname is, but I reckon it should be formally changed to "Maybe" in recognition of what his name often gets autocorrected to as well as the most appropriate answer to the question of whether his set shot from 20m out will result in a goal.

I hope the day comes soon that Maybe is autocorrected to Mayne (of the pre-GF 2013 variety).

I think just about every Dockerlander loves the Mayne Man. His off field stuff with Starlight and his onfield courage and third efforts epitomise the best of what we love. Well I do anyway.

But.... hes NEVER been a good kick, even when he had a few seasons of accuracy. All his kicks go basically straight up in the air, lack penetration and depth and therefore suffer with yips when his confidence goes or the wind blows.
We need forwards who are immaculate kicks for goal, its just too deflating in the really big games at the crunch moments to miss from 30 m out. All of Rolys players tackle hard and give 110%, this can be trained into a player and Roly does this in his sleep. What he cant train into a player is pure foot skills and class.
So, get a great goal kicker and teach him to tackle like Mayney but Im afraid you will be unlikely to get a great tackler to magically become a great kick.

Mayne seems to be a bit of a team whipping boy (I was guilty of this early in the season )so I thought I would compare a couple of key stats between him and Cyril Rioli.
Mayne from 2011 to 2015 has kicked 25, 39, 37, 13, 28 goals in each season respectively, giving a total of 142 for that 5 year period. Over that same period Cyril has kicked 29, 39, 19, 20 and 42 goals in each season, giving a total of 149 goals.
Inthat same time period Mayne had a tackle count for each season of 92, 83, 110, 91 and 122 giving a total of 499. Cyrils tackle count over the same period was 95, 121, 65, 45, 104 giving a total of 428.
Given he is only seven goals behind Cyril over that period but 71 tackles in front, why do we give Mayne such a hard time?

Mayne was given a couple of cfacks at playing in the backline but not a chance to settle into the role because it was never going to be a permanent thing, it was filling holes due to injury. Put him back there and give him a role to fill and let him know it is a permanent switch, He will be SOS with more pace, agility and skill.

Good debate about Mayne. It's persuaded me that he's a keeper and will be better if he is consistently allowed to play as a genuine third or fourth tall. Mind you, I still think Yarran will be a real threat to his spot, if he ever gets fit.

Yarran should be back at Peel this weekend (or next).

Yarran's calf will get an extra week's rest because of the WAFL bye this weekend for the State game between WA and Tasmania.

A minor point but for those years Cyril played 21 less games.

Comparing Cyril to Chris, is like comparing Nat Fyfe to Luke Schuey.......no comparison.

Son Son or ballas are the only players you can compare to Cyril as they are all small forwards.

Run mayne's numbers against bruest perhaps and then see how he fairs.
