Talking about functioning forward lines: Ballas heading towards the retirement home, Walters now a mid and Crozier no longer the fill-in. We are going to need a forward crumber in the next draft. And a ruckman wouldn't hurt.

Finally. Someone with plan that's crazy enough to work, instead of just being crazy.

Mayne can't kick a goal from 30m straight out in front, but he can chase, tackle, pressure and mark. He's experienced and is very mobile. And what is it we're missing in the back line? All those things.

It's a plan so cunning, you could pin a tail on it and call it a fox.

There's nothing wrong with Chris Mayne. It's just he's a third tall forward playing in a one tall forward forward line.

The problem is with the people who are supposed to have found two more tall forwards.

As I posted earlier on another forum.

The silly thing is, he's actually having a very good season - bar the goal kicking yips.

You want your forwards kicking goals, taking contested marks, laying tackles, getting contested possessions and taking marks inside forward 50.

There are only three players in the league who have kicked 10+ goals and averaged at least 5 tackles, 5 contested possessions, 0.5 contested marks and 1 mark inside forward 50 per game.

He is doing fine in terms of playing his role. His goal kicking is a lightning rod for the frustration of not having a quality key forward on our list.

I'll name a player that's had a good pre-season game - Matt De Boer. Right after we drafted him, it was an inter club game and he had a snap at goal at the three-tier end of Subi. Couldn't have been more that 4 metres out and he snapped out a head-high rocket that got the goal umpy square on the noggin - knocked him a$$ over t!t. It was hilarious, best non-home and away game ever.

Ok - back to Mayne.

He's a keeper - unlike most bigger forwards, Mayne gets his own ball, he hunts it and gets it. Call that defensive all you want, anyone that can get the ball like he does is bound to put a plus in the right column.

I reckon Mayne is not a natural forward. Yes, he has been assigned this role and given great effort. It seems we have been lacking some burst speed and strength across half back with the likes of Sutcliffe and Sheridan being moved off the ball too easily. I would think Maybe would be more suited to a straight line approach at the ball and the strength and speed to at least contest with most of the mid sized forwards in the game.
