TOPIC: Mayne

Stand corrected Fre-Doh, was still working on the assumption that his new contact would result in a second round pick. I am not that familiar with how this system works. Poor use of word stating that would improve trade value, but will still improve his value.

Grey deserves a go, and not just one game in the next 10 or so. He is the future and gives great effort and I'd back him to kick an average of one goal a game like Mayne has so far. His efficiency is 77% compared to Maynes 66%.

Any argument that Mayne is taller falls away because his contested marking is poor, always has been.

The only reason I can see why Mayne is getting game is to boost any chance of us getting a credit from the AFL if he walks.

Mayne is a CHF. Grey is not.

Mayne is often named as a CHF but that's given me a laugh as long as it's been happening. It's not his fault that some idiot/s at the club think he is suited to a key position. Therefore you may as well play someone like Grey......it makes us much sense.

Ok let's get real hear fellas, Mayne is at best a b grad footy player for freo. And I say that because as we have heard say, if he gets traded (which I hope he does) he will probably play some good footy for another club. He is a waste of space for freo. Even when he was a dead eye dick he didn't kick that may goals. I think he kicked 11 straight or something. So what. He can't take a contested mark and he has not impacted the score board for 2.5 years. He is worth trading. Good bait if you ask me. I like him as I can tell many of you do, but that doesn't win games I'm afraid. Ask yourself this. Would you be completely amazed if Mayne kicked 4 goals in one game. If your answer is yes, then let's trade the lad for someone who might become that player. Mayne should be traded. No doubt he will be while he's still worth something and that's a good thing. Mediocrity is not good enough. And for those who say "give him a chance" he's had his chance from what I can see. Time to shed your emotional thinking and become a rational logical thinking individual and say bye bye Mayney!!

Measuring Mayne on his goal kicking is like measuring Pav on his defensive pressure (woeful), or Duffman a few years ago for his spoiling (non-existent). Mayne is a defensive mid-sized forward. In a functioning forward line, the stuff that Mayne brings is important. The trouble is, we haven't had a functioning forward line for a couple of years. We've had few marking targets, and although Walters was great last year, Ballas has been disappointing for a couple of years, and we don't quite get enough goals from midfield. This puts more pressure on Mayne to kick goals, and he hasn't been up to it.

The corollary is in our backline, where we lost Duffman and Johnno, and all of a sudden quality players like Ibbo got exposed for just how bad they are with the football in hand.

It's about balance. In a balanced team, players like Mayne and Ibbo shine. We don't have that, and then you'd need to consider whether someone like Yarran will be better suited to the composition of the forward line.

I reckon Mayne has two more years of good footy in him. If he went to GWS or North, I reckon he'd look a lot like the player we saw in 2012/13.

Morgan, we don't pick backmen based on their ability to kick goals, although we take what we can get. We should be picking forwards based primarily on their ability to kick goals when they get the ball in a goalscoring position. If Mayne was dishing the ball off to players who were scoring goals he could deflect some criticism, but he is not, he is taking the shots, so he should be converting a higher percentage.

And for those who say going back to Peel won't fix his confidence and procedural problems when kicking at goal, tommyrot, it will force him to look at the reason he was dropped, and either solve the problem or stay in the 2's.

I agree that our forward line has not functioned for the last few years.
Do we blame the forward coach for that or the players?
For mine its a bit of both.
For the life of me I do not understand why our forwards cannot get their crap together and function alongside one another? Why cant they lead into open space and take a chest mark???
Yes I know delivery into the 50m has been poor but Mayne, Pav and Ballas have not been up to scratch for the past 2 years. Mayne does very little of anything despite what his supporters say (Mayne 2 tackles on the weekend, Suban 9, Barlow 6, Blakely 7). These are the numbers a REAL defensive forward should have.
Mayne does a lot of chasing but not much tackling.
Ballas needs to totally reassess his role in the team and get back to being a crumbing forward who gets to the right spots (ie front and square) like he did on Sat night.
Once Pav goes at the end of the year and Apeness, Tabener, Yarran, McCarthy, Walters, Ballas take control with Bennell and Fyfe resting Forward....we will trouble most teams IMO.
Straight swap....McCarthy for Mayne...or we throw in a late pick like 45 too?

I think that's a bit unfair. Mayne averages over 5 tackles a game. I'm not sure you could name a forward in the competition that averages more tackles than that.

RM, perhaps 20 years ago teams would chose forwards exclusively on how many goals they could kick, but all teams deploy defensive forwards these days. My point about Duffman was that if you chose on defensive abilities alone, players like Duff would never get a game. He was there exclusively for his kicking, which we needed. His defensive deficiencies were masked by a great team defence. Likewise, his kicking masked the disposal deficiencies of players like Ibbo.

In a better forward line Mayne's goal scoring would be masked by Pav, Ballas and Walters slotting goals. Let's not forget that when Mayne was kicking 1.3 goals a game last season, Ballas barely scraped one goal a game.

Mayne is being asked to do too much.

It's the kind of misses he produces that can be so deflating and all you can hear is the hissing of all that pressure built up by his defensive actions evaporating away. He offers some value as a defensive forward, but we're running more on defensive forwards than attacking ones at the moment. He could offset this hugely by becoming a reliable kick again.

He is such a loyal bloke to the club that if he were to leave you reckon he'd try to swing a trade rather than go free trade as a first option.

The game demands that you score more points than the opposition, goals are an easier way to produce this result than behinds. I stand by the view that for every good defensive tackle Mayne lays over the last few years they do not all result in goals to us. The shots on goal that he is missing quite often result in a goal at the other end. It is deflating to the morale of the mids and backs who are getting the ball to him. I would much rather he had 1.6 defensive tackles a game and 6 goals 1 than 6.1 defensive tackles a game and 1 goal 6. It would see us win more games than we lose.

Can we all focus please? Zac D is the designated escape goat. We don't need any more.

It's a reality check not escaped goat hunting. It's hard to get away from what's presented to someone at the game and watching replays.

As an aside to this post, the Fist is the most one dimensional key back I've ever seen.

My view on Mayne is not based upon him being an escaped goat more on the fact that he still has value to another team based upon his positive attributes. If we can develop a higher scoring, competitive forward line another way then I am all for keeping Mayne. He seems to be a person of very high quality.
Having said that he still needs to get back to kicking straight especially within 35m, don't think he has ever had a particularly long kick in him.
