Unless you use trial and error, you will never do anything new. OK, you don't just try anything, you are guided by what has been done in the past, but ultimately progress can only be made by occasionally taking a risk and trying something new.
Sometimes it can be spectacularly effective. Apparently the Australian swimmers of the 50's based their training on what they thought the Yanks were doing. They got it wrong, but in doing so totally dominated world swimming for a few years.

They were not trying to do something new. They were trying to win a premiership. If someone didn't know how to prepare for that then someone else should have replaced them. It's not a unique skill set.

I really don't think there is an appreciation by some people about how badly the season has gone. To take from your swimming comparison, we're Eric the Eel.

He's not a sports scientist - how would he know what has caused our spate of calf injuries?

I'm all for having a crack at a bloke who says something stupid but this wasn't. If our sports scientist, biomechanics expert and doctor come out after the investigation is complete and collectively say 'it's out of our depth' you could justifiably knock yourself out having a crack at them and asking why they remain employed at the club.

I think Ross is making the point, and gloating, that his philosophy on football has been proven correct. In the next off season we will see high intensity running, tactics and tackling. Less skill emphasis.
