TOPIC: Biggest Worry Ruckmen The Future

Are you honestly saying that a few years ago you considered ruck depth an area of concern? Are you saying that any reasonable person would have?

If memory serves, you though we had too many ruckmen.

Again, I find myself with Morgan on this. Big men seem to mature late, and Zac Clarke's best years are ahead of him. But I do wish he didn't have such spindly legs.

I'd argue that the management of Clarke and Griffin has been done poorly. In the past, they've both proven they can be top quality ruckmen for extended periods but Sandilands was dominating so a second ruckman was deemed a luxury. As a result the development and form of the backup ruckman has been almost nothing. Going through the motions at Peel waiting for Sandilands to get injured.

There should have been better system of rotation in place so that they were all given match practice and Sandilands was kept fresh.

They also shouldn't have lumped 4 backup ruckmen into one WAFL team.

How many good ruckmen are there in the sport? Aside from Sandilands, there's Max Gawn, Todd Goldstein, you probably have to say Naitanui, maybe Sam Jacobs (although now we're starting to drop off), then who? Maric was good for a while, but he's been ordinary this year. Obviously Ryder is terrific. But basically it's a position where you most of the time just try to stop the other team from having too much of an advantage. And every now and then you draft a Gawn (pick 34) or a Goldstein (37).

Across a list of 40, you probably need 4-5 ruckmen. With about 5 players getting the chop each year, you probably need to draft a ruckman every other year, or thereabouts. The other thing that you then need to do is be more ruthless/capable in assessing whether or not a young ruckman you've been developing for a couple of years is ever going to make it. That's where we've struggled, and the fact that people on here are still suggesting that Clarke's best is ahead of him shows that it's maybe not that easy. But we definitely need to get better at it.

Assuming that his poor form over the last two and a half years is due to his dodgy knee, I'd like to see Clarke re-signed and given a year off, a la Morabito. Or at least half a year.

At the start of the year he looked as though he was about to return to his best, but then the clash of knees in the first game has set him back into recovery mode.

I would have played Clarke and Griffin over Sandi in 2013 even if it risked dropping a top four spot. And in 2014 even if we dropped the minor premiership. Sure, some people wouldn't, but I would.

Another great idea: setting fire to your own hair.

Sandilands played 10 games in 2013. Starting from round 15.

Since round 2013 round 15 to 2016 round 2, he missed very few games. Rests, injuries and suspensions only kept him out for a handful of games.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

Once Sandi has retired I think we should just forget about a ruckman and do what all other teams do to us, just feed off the opposition taps. Hawks make it look easy...

There's always Dawson.... mwahahahaha....

When you've got a midfield full of ball winners, who cares how good your ruck is? He just has to make it a contest.

Hawthorn have won 3 flags without a ruck of Sandilands ability. They don't need one.

We do, however, need a serviceable ruck ,and we still do.

Griffin's problem hasn't been that he's been toiling away at Peel (although they have been a tad too clever with the affiliate WAFL system and ruck development issue), it's that he's done a knee and isn't the same player physically (yet?) that he was. He'd spent plenty of time in the seconds across his whole career and he had no problem stepping up for Sandi when he's had to (before doing his knee).

As for playing a second ruckman, that wasn't really a Freo issue, it was to do with the sub rule and was one most clubs found it was better to play one specialist ruck if they could get away with it. In fact Freo were one of the sides that would play more than one ruck more frequently.

We had a good backup for Sandi til Griff did his knee. Another problem Griff and Clarke may be having this year compared to 2013/14 is the quality of player they are trying to get the ball to. Take Mundy and Fyfe out of the centre square setup and any ruckman in the comp will look a little less competent.
