TOPIC: Biggest Worry Ruckmen The Future

I see the main weakness to fix in the future is the lack of quality in the ruck stocks .Ok we have Sandy but little else and Sandy is in the latter stages of his career .Clarke has been a huge disappointment and the others are little more than journeymen. After Sandy I worry as other areas are less of a concern in future seasons than ruck stocks.

Hopefully this all helps us realise what a massive weapon Sandi is. What I'm also seeing is that Griffin is barely a shade on what he was producing before he did his knee. He's got about 6-8 Freo rehab weeks to try and drag himself back into the frame I reckon. As for Clarke, at the risk of sounding like Homer chasing a spit pig, there's still time, there's still time. Supposedly he's been playing injured a lot over the past few years, but whether the seismic shift in his game happens or not we still probably want more than we've got in the ruck department for when Sandi goes. It's a pretty realistic wager on the big fella going another 2 or 3 contracts from here, but it might be a worthy investment to bring over one of those Yankee genetic mutants to see if they can't be fast tracked.

Yep paddy, I'm 100% with you, but I don't have the answer for this problem.
I strongly believe once Sandilands hangs up his boots, Freo will not see a top 4 finish for a long time. This is why I cringe when I currently hear the word rebuild. While Freo have Sandilands, they still have a small window of opportunity to sneak in another Grand Final and a chance for the big reward. He gives Freo a massive advantage over the opposition and we need to maximise that advantage while we have it.

Once he is gone, we won't find another who can do what he can, but we will still need to find something better than our current Griffin/Clarke/Hannath and rucks take a while to develop and gel with the midfield. Your better ruckmen are generally in their late 20s. Recruiting a quality in form ruckman isn't going to be easy, so I see a big compromise in this area of Freo's game in the few years post Sandilands.

Without a quality ruck, we'll need at least another couple of quality inside mids to help reduce the damage and here is another area that could get ugly on us very quickly (ie. if; Neale leaves, Fyfe never fully recovers from broken leg, Barlow plays forward, Mundy's career ends ...). So far Blakely is the only young one that fills me with some hope for our future inside mid stocks. Meanwhile, everybody is publicly screaming that Freo needs KPP's, which I think will further lead to Freo's ruck and midfield getting far less attention than it requires.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

Yeah we have a large gap after Sandi.
Zac Clarke has checked out - he is gone.
We need to recruit a young second stringer ruckman like other clubs have in the past on the way up ie Ivan Maric, Sam Jacobs, Stefan Martin, Mumford etc who were all quite cheap.
I know he is 31 but would Will Minson be a possible get for us for 3-4 years before we develop/target another one?

demo1, sorry to shoot you down but Will Minson...3-4 years? Minson cant get a game at a club where he is the only out and out ruckman! He is slow, skilless and old fashioned...a good competitor at best. And to top it off, he is older than Griffen!

Things arent as bleak as they seem. If Apeness can stay fit, he is the modern 2nd ruck, 3rd tall forward we are crying out for. We have sandi and griff next year and and will have to either continue to develop Hannath or look for a ruckman seeking opportunity elsewhere...

Clarke Hannath and Griff are back ups at best
My solution
Trade for Rory Lobb, and play him and the APE 50/50 in the ruck
BOOM

It goes to show you that drafting is an inexact science. If someone had have said in 2013 that in 2016 we’d be short a decent ruckman – and that we should draft one – you would have been called an idiot. Most would agree you probably only need 4-5 ruckmen on your list: an A-grader (Sandi), a competent back-up (Griff), a young up-and-comer (Clarke), and a speculative development player or two (Moller and Hannath). All of our ruckmen were overqualified for their respective roles.

And yet, here we are. Sandi is out for a season, Griff is a shadow of his pre-ACL self, Clarke never came on, Moller is gone and Hannath is virtually the same player he was when we grabbed him.

As it turns out, Apeness will probably end up being a ruckman, so we’ve got some cover.

Clarke is the real disappointment. I’d love to see him have at least one season when he wasn’t injured, but it may never happen. Against Richmond he was in a stationary marking contest, and couldn’t plant his leg. He shouldn’t have been out there. He’s a real candidate to be picked up by another team, finally be injury free, and be a very competent player for 5 years. Such a shame.

I'm not sure that's evidence of an inexact science. Science badly done, perhaps.
