Keeping the existing coach to oversee a rebuild has risks. Hiring a new coach to oversee a rebuild has risks. The best course of action may depend on the quality of the outgoing / incoming coach.

I think Roly was a good coach for St Kilda. I think Watters was a poor coach for St Kilda. It might be unfair on Watters to point to results - he didn't have a lot to work with - but when the team hires a little person and sets him on fire at Mad Monday, it's probably fair to say he didn't have the respect of the players. It's probably also fair to say that they weren't the best bunch of guys.

Besides, you never know - Roly could be right that we don't need a rebuild. Guess we'll find out next year.

There’s still a fair bit of Victorian chauvinism (and some hindsight revisionism) in that article though. Particularly in the assessments of Bennell and McCarthy’s character and the Dockers list overall. I’m sure if Alex Pearce or Weller were on a Vic list they’d be feted as bright young things destined for A-grade status. I also don’t know if a side with Shuey, Gaff et al could be said to be totally committed to WA drafting.
