TOPIC: Team Selections

I fully understand the need to play the young kids to see how they go in the big time but it's a fine line between giving them experience and throwing them to the wolves.
It's also a delicate balance when you run the risk of supporters not turning up to games and membership numbers dropping off.
Nobody wants to see your team belted every week with no glimmer of hope of a win coming up. It's that bad that we are worried about not beating Essendon at home.
The spin from Roly before the game of not playing players who won't se us into the future is just that-spin. Because if it were the case guys like Suban, Mayne, Clarke, Dawson and sadly, Pav wouldn't be getting a game.

In saying all that I for the life of me cannot understand some of the selections and roles handed tp players this year.

Clarke-if we're playing him to attract a trade well it's certainly not working as he contributes nothing. He appears injured and when you continually play like this badly nobody is going to show any interest. He doesn't deserve a game and how little must they think of Hannath if he can't get a game in front of him.

Ibbotson/Collins-last year Ibbo played as the back line spare/floater and was one of the leaders in the league in intercept marks. This year we decide to play him as a third tall where he is constantly outsized and out muscled. Why do we go into every game undersized in the backline with only two big backmen when most teams have three big forwards. Collins to all here would be an obvious third tall and even though he gets great wraps each week at Peel he doesn't get a game.

Barlow-every time he is played in the middle he gathers possessions, does all the in and under stuff we need and yet we continually play him as a half forward.

Hill-is always at his best gathering the ball through the centre and driving it into attack but we have tried to play him as a half back.

Sheridan/Sutcliffe-drafted as midfielders but we have tried I would say unsuccessfully to make them into halfbacks. How about we draft players for certain positions that they know instead of trying to make them into something they're not.

As Polly said somewhere else Sat nights game was one of the worst team selections I've seen. Knowing the weather was going to be bad and then not playing Barlow or De Boer and playing Clarke instead was ridiculous.

De Boer didn't kick a ball in anger all weekend.
Barlow churning out a win for Peel was mystifying.
ZacD gets omitted, doesn't play Magoos and receives an instant recall.
Playing Walters in the midfield seems odd given he has been our only target up forward for the past two seasons.
Why was Brady Grey dropped again? Seems like we could have had Cotchin under tighter control with Grey tagging.

I agree that the team selections are baffling but Lyon has form here. In the 2014 qualifying final ( think that's what it was) at crappy anz stadium he played both Clarke and Taberner despite them both being out of form and the weather having been apocalyptic all week- including game day. Going in tall was insane. Anyway both players were useless, we lost, and our season was over.

This makes complete sense.
How come we can all see it but those paid the big bucks in the club can't? Are they just too close to it to have an objective view?

And don't get me started on their reviews of their pre-season and list management which is being done in house . Well By any measure it must lack objectivity and proper scrutiny. I think you can predict the outcome when you get to review your own work!

Give me a week where people are completely happy with team selections and give me a club where the players stay in one position for the entire game, yet alone their entire careers.

Fremantle played like Peel did earlier in the (wet) day – more or less kick it long to a pack – forget about marking and bring it to the ground and hope we can mop up – or thats what it looked like – if that was the plan having talls like Clarke in would make sense. Unfortunately we made some bad mistakes (as did the maggots) – and we couldn't spread like the opposition could and we lost. We lacked skill and experience but that also comes from playing so many young blokes. It was an awful dispiriting game for the fans and probably for the players but as they say what doesn't kill you will make you stronger. And as bad as things look I expect the coaching panel to keep trying things and bringing new players into the heat. I liked the look of young Matthew Uebergang for Peel. He's still a rookie but seemed to have a level of class about him. Dunno if he (deserves or) will get a game this year but the way things are going he might. Bring back Barlow. He might not be an overlap player (terminology? – you know the sort of player that comes past the ball carrier to take the ball to feed it on) but he can get it. I'm sure there is room for both he and Blakely (and Neale).
