TOPIC: Losing draft picks

Just a thought! but with the AFL watching and waiting to pounce I think we must play the likes of Barlow or DeBoer when they've done well in the 2nds or we'll definitely be accused of tanking - punishment being "loss of draft picks for next 2 years"!! Also we need a bit of grunt in the midfield to support these youngsters and surely it's 'horses for courses' with last night's weather suiting Barlow or DeBoer before Clarke and after all, DeBoer can 'ruck' (sarcastic font).

BTW has anyone noticed the disposals of other high possession midfielders? Listening on radio to Gee/Collwd game they were saying how sloppy Dangerfield's disposal was and also his previous game. I also heard those comments earlier in the year against Pendlebury so maybe Neale isn't the only one. I guess once you are one of the main dudes in the middle and getting pounced on by all and sundry you just have to get rid of it anyway you can. Have noticed Walter's disposal getting a bit iffy now he is spending more time in mid?

If we do end up in 18th spot (and the next two weeks will give us a bead on that), you can be sure that the AFL will introduce quick smart the 'ballot' of bottom four teams for draft sequence.

RE: the AFL and Freo tanking, according to the bookies, Freo have started 7 of their 9 games so far this season as the outsiders. So really, the AFL can only so far look at the R2 Gold Coast loss (unlikely Ross would tank so early) and the R5 Carlton loss (lost by one kick after Fyfe breaking leg). Neither of which have any statistical data indicating Freo were tanking.
Unless you look just at the 0-9 win/loss result, there's nothing to support an argument that Freo has been tanking.

Neale is an absolute gun. If we don't do everything we can to keep him at Freo, I'll be devastated. When you get as much of the footy as Neale does, you can afford to have a clanger or two. I thought last year Neale's disposal was superb. I think we are noticing turnovers much more this year and our players are under more pressure due to our struggling midfield and coaching instructions to play the Hawthorn style uncontested possession. A short kick turnover always looks worse than a 50m bomb down the line to a contest.

DK one of the reasons we have started outsiders is the team selected in the first place. Which I think is what the AFL would be looking at and not the odds the betting agencies are offering.

Tanking ? Really ? Barlow should have played this week but apart from that oversight we have picked the best available 22 each week. Our injuries and lack of depth is responsible for the tanking talk. It's utter rubbish.

If injured players keep piling up as they are doing, the Dockers will be reduced to picking 22 from the remaining couple of dozen fit players still available. Would the AFL call that tanking?

KK, the AwFL have the opportunity to question teams selected every week when team lists are submitted with the reasons for ins and outs. I read articles which indicated the AwFL looked at Pav's resting from Tassie and they had no issues with it. If they have a problem with let's say for example Barlow's omission, then they should voice up prior to that game, not bring it up later out of concerns for tanking. ... but then it is the AwFL, so my logic counts for nothing.

It suits their agenda, so YES most likely, Freo will be made an example of again.

Agree with you DK about the value of Neale. The same thing applies to Barlow. With regards to number of possessions he's second to Neale in being able to find the ball and get it out even if he's not quick or with elite disposal(same as Neale)
He is still very relevent to our side particularly with our injuries.
So why the hell do we play him as a half forward?

They are picking the players that will play for the club for the next 7 years. A good way to teach them though would be put them around Barlow when the conditions are a combination of hail and sleat.

I'm a huge fan of Ross Lyon. Many times in the past when I have questioned his direction, I have later seen new evidence to understand that he was right and I was wrong ... I'm not sure how long I'll have to wait before I understand why Barlow isn't at the Rucks toes where I think he belongs.

(& not sure I'll ever understand why Sutcliffe started on Stringer in Round 1).

Its not just Barlow that should be playing, I think that De Boer should have been a starter for the last month too, he would have been great in the wet conditions against Richmond. Also why the hell not play Sam Collins. He is clearly one of our best at holding disputed marks and seems to kick pretty well too. We are taking very few marks inside our forward 50 and with Collins in it would mean pressure off Pav. Now Pearce is out he could also move back. In his bio Roger Hayden says of him - He’s a big, physical key defender with an outstanding aerobic capacity and reads the play very well. We must have the smallest backline in the game currently and at 194cm he would take the heat off Ibbo.

The AFL are never going to come out and say one specific incident is tanking. It will be a combination of things, a build up of various incidents and not just selection but things like where players are positioned will be taken into account.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

We are Not Tanking! We are but a pawn in the awfl's game plan. If the awfl thought we were tanking they would try and make us win and see if we took our chances or not. NO, instead we are being stripped of dignity by the awfl that maybe didn't respect the passion of our fans as the purple army marched toward the MCG unrepentant in 2013 on the last saturday in september.
If we were tanking the awfls' umpiring crew wouldnt be paying ridiculous borderline frees like they did last night when we perceived pressure and rushed a behind only to be penalised the full 6 points. And did anyone notice how we were being held before we got the ball and even being penalised for being held.
No we are NOT TANKING, the awfl is making a statement!

The ironic thing is that there were only 20160 or thereabout spectators last night, so at last this will start costing the awfl money, one of the few things they respond to. If this continues they will probably start paying attention.
