Looks like they're at it again it. Obviously they don't realize we are tanking....

Of course it was different when McKenzie did it from 40m out last week. Just laughable that the AFL is the only sport in the world that makes it up as they go along.

Now Walters dumped into the turf with a whole arm across his back. Everyone on the field thought it was a free except the three umps.

True, Spud, but we should have been able to deal with that ball given we had a two-on-one against a ruckman. How slow did Dawson look.

Yeah probably should have dealt with it, but in the wet and wind it isn't unreasonable to go safety first. No point in suggesting umpiring to the conditions given they can't do it in good conditions.

Good thing they tightened the rules on deliberate out of bounds and rushed behinds....shame its come at the cost of relaxing other rules severely. Two seasons ago if you took possession the onus was on you to get rid of it legally otherwise it was holding the ball. now holding the ball is only called with obvious prior opportunity. two years ago, if you bump someone after they got rid of the ball it was a free kick at the spot the ball lands. Now it's fully legal to shove someone to ground through the back after they've disposed of it.

Nah, I saw them pay a few illegal disposal frees, and a few push after the kick frees as well, good to see the umps looking after the mighty WA state side for a change.

Thank god we get all the benefits of home own umpiring. Otherwise it might have got really ugly...

The deliberate rushed behind rule was brought in as an anti-time wasting tactic. If they're now going to be paying it with such a low tolerance, as an anti-defending tactic, then they can't be giving the other team a kick from the top of the goal square. It's an disproportionate penalty. It has to become a ball up.

Shane's right, what is currently a balls up should be a ball up.

I thought Chamberlain had retired, the season just got worse.

My favourite was in the Sydney - Hawthorn game. Sydney player takes possession 40m out from the goal they are defending, and immediately goes to kick it. Gets tackled, ball misses foot, pffft, free kick. Goal. A few minutes later, Puopelo has, if anything, more time. Tries to kick while lying on the ground - misses his foot - play on.

And I don't get it. You get tackled and drop the ball, its a free kick against you. You get tackled and hold onto the ball as hard as you can while pretending that you are trying to handball it, and all is fine. You get tackled and hold onto the ball with all your might until you see friendly hands nearby and then you let the ball get ripped from your grasp - just fine.

Yes RR, and it's not "interpretation", it's just the umpires aren't following the laws as written.
If a player has prior, then they have to correctly dispose the ball immediately. That's immediately, not after a full 360degree rotation until they find a team mate to then handball it to.
If no prior, then they have to make a genuine attempt. That's genuine attempt, not hold it tight to their body and wait for the umpire to call a ball up.
It's like watching cricket umpires in India decades ago who would make decisions based on the quality of the home ground appeal, with total ignorance of the LBW laws.

With the deliberate rushed behind rule - when I've seen it in the past the player who takes the kick lines up from where the ball crossed the line. Spurr soccered the ball into the post - so technically shouldn't Razor Ray have made Vickery line up from the line between the goal and point posts rather than dead in front?

DockerKnockers
Yes, Chewyboot, you are absolutely correct. So it appears that the umpires make a bad decision last week by not penalising West Coast, then they penalise Freo for an incident not nearly as bad and then stuff up where the free kick should have been taken. Once again another example of the umpires not following the Laws as they are written. How do they expect the players to abide by the Laws of the game when the umpires don't appear to know them.

15.7.2 Taking Free Kick
A Free Kick awarded under Law 15.7.1 shall be taken from the middle
of the goal square if it crossed the Goal Line or at the point where the
football crossed the Behind Line or from the relevant Goal Post.
