TOPIC: Barlow

I love Mick Barlow but he is finished. Conor blakeley is keeping him out and Neale is out other in and under.

I don't want to see Barlow in the side again.

Learning your craft also means that you need some older players around you to do the grunt work and show the way to the kids otherwise getting smashed week after week is very demoralising .

None of Sheridan, Suban or CPearce are quicker than Barlow. At best they are the same pace with fewer abilities.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Not sure i'd agree on that. But anyway, like I said, I'd have played them both on a wet day.....if I wanted to win.

I like your optimism about challenging for the flag next year Bizkit but we've got more holes in our list than swiss cheese.
We need two gig forwards, a decent back up ruckman, one or two big backmen and some attacking running half backs.
Fyfe, old Sandi and a consistently injured Johnno aren't going to change that.
Plus we've got nothing of interest to trade except for Lachie Neale and we can't afford to let him go.

Mikey Barlow has gone back to the magoos and dominated for two consecutive weeks. Actually, that's ridiculous, 'dominated' doesn't even come close. I assume you get paid more for playing AFL than WAFL, and there is no question that Barlow deserves a raise this week.

In fact, if he plays for Peel again I hope we get done for tanking.

But according to DK all we need are midfielders to win a premiership and they'll all be back next year?!

We've fallen dramatically this season and are no where near as bad as our ladder position indicates. RL is a big driver of that ladder position though and needs to step up massively in the off season. McCarthy and the development of Weller, Blakely and Hughes will also go a long way as well as APearce and hopefully Collins instead of Dawson.

We have plenty of talent but figuring out how to develop it and use it is the problem I don't think our head honcho's are handling too well.

Tonight's game was summed up beautifully in the third. A Pearce was sold into a horrible position in the back pocket but pulled a fantastic kick to Griff on the back 50m only to see him spill the mark and the ball go back the other way for a goal from the goal square. That, and seeing Danyle Pearce attempt a 2m kick to a teammate on the boundary which I rarely even see at Auskick.

You can make the argument about surrounding the kids with the senior players but I reckon the senior players, Pav excepted, are largely the ones letting us down.

What I saw tonight as part of the 20K+, that showed up was a team bereft of confidence. But please don't ask Roly what confidence is. Playing Barlow or De Boer won't solved the problem. It's no more humiliating losing tonight then 12 months ago against the same side when we're at 9 - 0. Barlow and co are not going to be part of any premiership side unless the Hawks come knocking. From where I sit, Blakely and co are getting opportunities finally and people are still crying foul. Playing WAFL doesn't make you better.

Blakely had his best game tonight. I know he is young but I hope his disposal gets better.

Torrential rain and howling winds...

I was surprised to see our disposal % above 70%...

Must have been all the hospital handballs to team mates in worse situations..

There is a spot for barlow in that midfield. Neale isnt the big body protection that weller and blakeley need. Play barlow on the ball with those guys

"But according to DK all we need are midfielders to win a premiership and they'll all be back next year?!"

Bizkit, I've never said any such thing.

I do believe that if Freo are lucky enough to have a fully fit team next year, even with our current list, Freo could again be Top 4 and with some luck, even premiership contenders. I am very concerned that once 211 retires, we have some very tough years ahead.

I want Barlow in the team. Much of the arguments I have presented have argued just how well Freo perform when 211 and the midfield of Fyfe, Neale, Mundy, Barlow, Hill, & D.Pearce play well. If I had to generalise my likes, I would say I prefer the high disposal players, especially those capable of high contested possessions. If Fyfe, Neale or Barlow get 30+ disposals in a game, I don't really mind if their disposal effectiveness is a little less than other quality midfielders. Much the same as I don't really mind if 211 does not have as high a Hit Outs to advantage % as other ruckmen. My reasoning is, if you have players getting hands on the ball more often and before the opposition, then you are stopping the effectiveness of the opposition, sometimes even when their disposal efficiency is better than ours.
It is for these reasons, I also prefer a mature experienced high disposal winner over youth when it comes to finals football. But right now where Freo are in 2016, I love seeing the youth get the games while Win/Loss results are not a priority.
I also value Contested Marks and intercept marks highly. So yes, I also wish Freo had better KPPs.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

I remember not too long ago we were the envy of every team in the AFL as we had the best midfield in the competition. What happened?
