21 possies and 2 goals half way through the 2nd qrt. Get him off now and chuck him in the middle tonight.

Bozza - was just thinking the same thing.

Although he has his weaknesses, one of his strengths would be tight, congested football.

Maybe a selection oversight.

What the hell does he think he's doing? Kicking goals will never get him a recall.

BARLOW, Michael 44 26 18 1 13 3 1

44 possessions, 13 tackles and 3 goals out of 5 for the winning side. Could he have been useful for us today? No. No, I'd much prefer Sheridan.

Assuming we are outright tanking you still need to protect and develop your youngsters in the right way. Having lost a few important big bodies in the middle like Sandi and Fyfe (or moving Manic to defense), we need someone in there to help and teach our kids. In addition to that Barlow is the perfect wet weather footballer and it is just plain stupid not to play him in the wet.

Never mind Barlow had done little to be dropped in the first place, you are also throwing in the towel to the opposition and your own players by making these clearly dodgy decisions. It won't be all or even most but some players will drop their head and go half hearted knowing the result doesn't matter and various decisions on the field made by players will change. Should I be more selfish and go for glory or do the team thing when the result doesn't matter? Will I put my body on the line? Will I chase as hard? A lot of these questions will subconsciously run through some players minds when it shouldn't and that is a horrible way for youngsters to enter a team.

When Barlow has such a dominant performance in the WAFL last week and can't get in the side opposed to some of the shockers of late from others still playing, you know the selection committee is placing little importance on the output of players. There's little reward in playing well at WAFL level and the same works in reverse for poor performances at AFL level.

Barlow's performance this afternoon makes an absolute mockery of RL's selection policy's when it was clear to all he should be playing tonight.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

What about DeBoer, he has been racking up big numbers week after week. I reckon he could have done a lot better than Croziers 1 kick. at three quarter time.

De Boer and Barlow aren't good enough kicks to be in a side that's challenging for a flag. Yeah, you might get a few more wins this year if they play in front of some kids, but does the team grow in the long run? Barlow will come back in next week, get his 22-30 touches and not be a match winner.

Love him to death, but he's not what we need long-term. Short-term, absolutely.

Biz, RL doesn't pick the team the match committee does

Dockerman perhaps it has escaped your attention but we don't actually have any match winners plus their disposal is no better or worse than players like D Pearce, Suban, Mayne, Sheridan and other younger players

Leave docker_man alone, poor fella is trapped in a weird time ripple wherein we are still challenging for a flag.

We aren't challenging for a flag this season E Man but I reckon we could have a good go of it next year and Barlow still has a few good years left. Not only that but his disposal shouldn't be as large a factor if played in his preferred role as a midfielder opposed to a half forward. He would have been fantastic tonight and while we still would have lost, it would have been far less humiliating and taught the kids plenty.

I would find it very hard to believe RL doesn't have the overwhelming and final say on any ins/outs in selection meetings. You reckon Rosich or Bond are telling RL he shouldn't be playing Barlow anymore and his career is over Montrachet? I would imagine the 'selection committee' is more of an excuse not to pin the blame for bad decisions on one person than an actual committee.

In any case I don't see the likes of Sheridan, Suban or CPearce having long or successful careers at Freo and I don't understand why they are the ones supporting the kids ahead of Barlow.

I think the overwhelming message from the match committee is to play the kids and rightly so. Ross doesn't believe he can afford two slow players on the park while Blakely is learning his craft. Could have a point. I would have thought less so on a wet day but again it depends on your (draft) goals.
